SRAM NX 1XIt was inevitable.  In SRAM’s 1x version of Sherman’s March to the Sea, the prohibitive cost of some of 1X…mostly the cassette…and the requirement to use the 1X specific XD hub driver, could be what keeps a budget minded buyer, or a budget minded bike spec manager working in an OE environment, from moving to 1X.

SRAM NX seeks to remedy those two things.  Details below, if you want to sort through it all, specs and such what, but some thoughts on this first.  Interesting that the 10T cog on the cassette is lost and we get an 11T bottom gear.  That is a pretty good hit to the top end speed of any XC based bike for sure, and for where we live, in So Cal, that would be noticed on open fireroads and faster singletrack even on a trailbike.  However this allows for NX to be used on a ‘standard’ freehub body (re:  Shimano-type) and that opens up use to wheels on lower cost bikes that would not need to be XD driver specific.  It’s a trade off.  The cost does come down though, even on things like the chain and cranks, etc.  So although weight goes up, cost comes down.  It is a way to go that will work for many buyers.  For instance, the $79.00 PG-1130 cassette, while a bit heavy, is a much smaller hit to the wallet than any 1X unit from SRAM previously, although it is not running that 10T cog.  And that does prevent anyone who has SRAM 1X now (and an XD driver equipped hub) to go ‘backwards’ to the cheaper PG-1130 NX model.

One other thing of note is the $14.00 chain.  I don’t think I can buy a Powerlink much cheaper than that.  Interesting.
