Sneak Peek: Singular “Rooster” 29+ Prototype- by Guitar Ted
Twenty Nine Inches has been aware of a Singular Cycles prototype for a while now, but this bike was under wraps until today when Singular Cycles head, Sam Alison, posted this image to Facebook. Of course, being a prototype and all, things can change, but this loks like a much more refined, production ready frame than many prototypes we’ve seen.
Here’s what we know so far: While the frame shown does not have a 29+ rear wheel, it will easily take one. Apparently Sam is waiting on “proper rims…” for a full 29+ build. Chainstay length is reportedly 439mm at the short end and can be made slightly longer if desired. Yes- that means the bike has a eccentric bottom bracket, which is typical for most Singular models. Of course, this means the bottom bracket drop will be slightly adjustable from about 70mm to 76mm.
Information is limited for now, but we happen to know where one of the prototypes is going to be and who the test rider is, so stay tuned for a report coming in the weeks ahead.
UPDATED: Sam has updated his post with more images, which we want to share with you here as well….

‘Tis exciting indeed… 🙂
now I’m getting excited about 29+ thing… Singular does things right in my book.
Kool looking……..hope it is not a 30 lbs ludite! Please tell us how much the ECB creaks…
On my most wanted list I have 3 things:
A 29er singlespeed, a Singular and a 29+. So this bike might be trouble for my bankaccount 😉
Very cool, and very cool of Singular to join the 29+ fray…I’m frankly surprised we didn’t see something specific from Salsa first (I know, a few of their fatbikes are 29+ compatible).
Nothing not to like about this. QR rear, eccentric BB, tapered head tube, 27.2 seatpost size, removable cable routing. The only thing that could ruin it would be if it was a porker.
Sorry to disappoint you, Yogi. No creaks ever from any of the 4 EBB equipped Singular frames I own. Typically, I’ve found people who complain about EBB creaking are ones who haven’t invested the necessary time to understand the maintenance and lubrication a bicycle and it’s parts require. That is not the fault of the EBB. Food for thought… I have been riding EBBs since 1999, FWIW.
It isn’t total coincidence. I asked Salsa for the Fargo (not by that name, but by that intent) in 2007… After the 2010 season, they told me they didn’t need my services on their team, so now Singular has the benefit of my ideas. Sam and I think a lot alike, so working with him on prototype development is a true pleasure. We have very similar ideas on what makes a frame and fork ride well.
Bill, it isn’t bad, weight-wise. It is 29lb w/o pedals or cage, and about 30 ready to ride. Nothing exotic as far as parts, except perhaps the Velocity Dually-based wheelset (Hope front/XTR rear hubs, DT Champion custom cut, butted spokes, brass nipples, built by me on Saturday) which is top-notch. Unfortunately, Knards are nothing special…
We’ll be getting a pre-production bike soon and building it up with a “Smart Lite” build to show off the first build option we’ll be offering on Rooster builds. We’ve got 3 tests in the works as well of said build between now and June.
