Mavic Drift Shoe: On Test- by Guitar Ted
Awhile back we introduced the “Mavic Triple Play” we will be featuring here at Twenty Nine Inches for the next test period. It has fallen to me to check out these Winter rated shoes for mountain biking, Mavic’s Drift model.
Mavic has the following to say about the Drift on their website:
-Cross-country shoes Drift
-Insulated fully waterproof GORE-TEX® shoe to keep you warm and dry all winter long.
Weight : 450 grams (8.5)
(Note: I assume this weight is for each shoe, as there is no way a pair comes close to this weight.)
As you can see, I’ve already been riding in these and I will be back with my first impressions soon. I can say for now that the actual weight of the Drift is 1100 grams/2.42lbs for the pair with a pair of Shimano mtb cleats installed. (Because a set of shoes are pretty worthless without cleats, in my opinion. 😉 )
So stay tuned for a First Impressions post to come very soon on these shoes meant for colder weather riding. I will give my thoughts on fit and function, and hopefully I will be able to test the water resistance on these by that time. (Weather permitting)
Note: Mavic sent the Drift mtb shoes over to Twenty Nine Inches for test/review at no charge. We are not being bribed nor paid for this review and we will strive to give you our honest thoughts and opinions throughout.
That seems EXTREMELY heavy!!! What does a pair of your “normal” shoes weigh?
@Yogi- The new Shimano top-o-the-line XC shoes weigh a claimed 673 grams for the pair, but they cost $370.00 too. 😉
Most shoes weigh more than you might think.
I just got some, but the upper front cover flap on mine does not cover the tongue and stay closed, fits fine behind. we will see if that is sufficient once snow is down. Quality seems typical for mavic, very high.
Ted Eames: That doesn’t sound too good. I’ve read that in previous years these shoes have had a gap between the ankle cuff and the tongue/upper which lets water in, and, from your description, it sounds like this is still the case. When you say it doesn’t ‘stay closed’, do you mean that the Velcro of the cuff comes undone, or that the gap between the cuff and the rest of the shoe opens up?
GT: I would be really interested to hear your findings regards the above, and also about their cold-weather performance.
@Ion @All: I will have my First Impressions written up and posted yet this week. Stay tuned…
But for now I will tell you, Ion, your assessment of the leakage point is spot on. 😉
