Interbike ’13: Velocity USA Shows Dually, New Hubs- by Guitar Ted
Recently we posted the press release for Velocity USA’s Dually rims, (seen here), and at Interbike, we were able to touch the new 45mm wide rims. However; that wasn’t all we saw.
New Hub Design: Velocity USA debuted a new hub design at Interbike which is pretty trick. It has been designed to not only be better sealed against the elements, but in a stronger, more durable way as well.
Central to the design is a modular approach which allows the rider to choose from Shimano, Campagnolo, or XX-1 drivers all on the same hub, and even 10 or 11 speed variants are available. Just specify what you want when you order hubs, but if you switch up bikes or componentry, the wheels will be able to follow you along.
Of course, the axles are convertible as well from standard quick release to 142X12, or 15mm through axle up front. Velocity states these new hubs are still lightweight, but should be much more durable than the previous series of hubs.
Road hubs are also available from Velocity for those looking for a new road wheel set. Now you’ll be needing something to lace those hubs to, and Velocity USA can fix you up right with a good rim, and a competent, handmade wheel build.
Velocity USA has in house wheel builders that can lace any of their hubs, or even ones you send them, to any of their rims. Each wheel build is signed and dated by the builder. Pretty cool!
Of course, the star of our visit was the new Dually 45mm wide rim. It will first be available in polished, (seen at left), or in black anodized. Eventually, Velocity expects there to be a full palette of colors for this rim, similar to what you see offered in the Blunt rim series.
These new Dually rims are to be used on the new 700c “29+” tires or with wider 29″er tires down to the 2.3″ range, as suggested by Velocity. Velocity will also roll these in 26″ diameters for those wanting a lighter fat bike rim.
Velocity estimated the weight on the 29″er version of these rims seen here to be around 675 grams each, but said that first production samples were actually coming in slightly lighter than this. That’s pretty spectacular for a rim this wide.
The rims are also designed to work with tubeless ready tires. Currently the 24mm tape that Velocity sells will work well with tubeless ready tires. Velocity said that they are working on a new, thicker, wider tape for the Dually, so we will bring you the info on that as soon as the kit is available from Velocity. Expect that to happen probably early next year.
In the mean time, we are happy to announce that Velocity USA will be building up a set of the Dually rims on a set of the new hubs for Twenty Nine Inches to do a long term test and review with. We’re expecting the polished set up with the disc hubs. These will likely get tested with some of our current 2.4″ tires we have on hand. Stay tuned for that introduction coming about a month from now.
More special reports from our Interbike visit will be coming your way soon.
