45NRTH, the company that is well known for its fat bike tires and winter boots, (see the newest boot, Fasterkatt, here), has announced two new tires today. Here’s what we know so far…
The tires are both using 45NRTH’s aluminum based and carbide tipped studs. The first and most relevant tire to talk about here is the “Nicotine”, a 29″ X 2.35″ wide studded tire that will feature 222 studs in a new tread pattern designed for “hard-pack conditions”. 45NRTH also claims a newly designed stud with a concave tip will double the working edges on each stud to increase grip in slippery conditions. These new studs will be embedded in a 120TPI casing.
Aimed at commuters using cross bikes and touring bikes, the Gravdal will also feature the aluminum based and carbide tipped studs, but not the concave tipped ones of the Nicotine, presumably. The Gravdal features a tread pattern with closely spaced center knobs that are to reduce rolling resistance while the studs are arranged in a “U” shape to enhance acceleration and cornering traction. The Gravdal will be offered in a 120TPI and 27TPI model with the 120TPI tire having a folding bead and 252 studs. The 27TPI version will feature a steel bead and the same 252 studs. No word yet on tire width. (Which seems odd. You would think that would have been in the release we received.)
45NRTH says that both the Nicotine and Gravdal tires will be available October 1st for riders to buy. See www.45nrth.com for further details.
