On One “Chunky Monkey” 2.4″er Tires: On Test- by Guitar Ted
On One, the direct to consumer company from the U.K., has been delving into the tire market of late. We reviewed the Smorgasbord last year and gave it high marks. (See review here) We were aware that at the same time, On One also designed and had manufactured a wider tire dubbed the Chunky Monkey. (How can you not smile when you read that?
) Well, beyond the fun sounding name, we were curious if this bigger tire might live up to our high expectations set by the Smorgasbord, so we got a set in to test and review.
Here is what On One says about these tires:
The On-One Chunky Monkey. A tyre designed predominantly for front use, with a big 58mm carcass to take the knocks and a 60mm tread width with solid shoulders to carve the lines in the trail you want.
Okay, so we are looking at one each of the “Trail Extreme” and the “Enduro” models. We’ll be coming back with an Out Of The Box posting soon, and at that time we will tell you about our plans for these big shoes.
Note: On One sent over these tires for test/review at no charge to Twenty Nine Inches. We are not being paid, nor bribed for this review and we will strive to give you our honest thoughts and opinions throughout.

Love this tire. It’s the 2.4 Ardent with grip. I’ll be interested in your weights and measurements, as I didn’t bother with my tire. I want to see if it’s appreciably larger than the Smorgasbord.
It is considerably larger than the Smorgasboard – and that isn’t a small tyre (mine was measured at 2.3″ today, alas we didn’t measure the Chunky Monkey up front).
There isn’t that much space left in the Reba with the Chunky on….
What I don’t know is how the Smorgasboard measures up to other tyres. It barely fits in the back of the Whyte T129S so I am on the look out for something a smidge narrower but with equally aggressive properties.
Rumor is that the 2.25 Somorgasbord regularly measures in at near 2.3. Now, if the Chunky Monkey is a true 2.4 tire, it might be a better trade off to stick with the Smorgasbord and save some weight. The Smorg seems to be coming in around 850 grams. I haven’t seen a weight for the Chunky Monkey yet.
FWIW, I’m running the Chunky on the rear of my bike. The weight doesn’t bother me much, and it rolls better than other beefy tires I’ve tried.
