Mavic makes fine wheels, but this SLR is just too heavy, too narrow, too late and probably too expensive. Lot's of nice letter combinations, but it is a long time ago since SLR was the pinnacle of race wheels. Mavic has a lot to prove, but this was no good news.

Hi Fletchy, please don't get me wrong. If the bead fits one can mount and ride any tyre, its just in my opinion anything more than about 2.25 on a 19mm I'd rim ends up like a "lightbulb" and doesn't work all that well.
Ie: love my 2.4 racing ralphs but they squirm and bounce all over the place on a smaller rim - steering is a bit hit and miss even when rigid.

@Professed...Specialized has been specing 2.4 Purgatory tires on Mavic 719 hoops for years on the Stumpy models, all be it in the 26er models.

Hi Stevo, says on the datasheet lefty compatible and with IS disc tabs. But thinking a little harder - 19mm I'd rims - mm, pretty much no good except for smaller (2.25 max) tyres and UST - how many of us ride on UST 29er tyres? A pain to mount tubeless ready with no hooked rims and small diameter... Bit heavy for XC, bit narrow for trail. Bit compromised all round.

On a big +ve note - bring on the grip shift and type II derailer. Fantastic stuff!

Thanks for all the write ups GG. Its great to enjoy the excitement for thousands of miles away.

The Mavic wheels look the goods as always. I had a pair of crossmax SLRs and found them really stiff and tough. They were also slow to engage (2 pawl days), maintenance hungry and the nylon bushing internally used to wear causing play quite quickly.

Seems these hubs are now 4 pawl - bravo! But are the internals the same as old? If all these old issues have been remedied i would love to have a set again.
