@Ken P: You would use a spacer kit and cassette style single speed cog held on by a lock ring from a cassette, or just get a Surly cog and their excellent SS spacer kit.

Based off of your review, I purchased a set of these wheels. How do you convert them to single speed?

Hi Santacruz blues. What wheels did you get TL? I was just about to ask Canyon. Description is M1800. Not M1800-TL

Just ordered a 2012 Canyon Grand Canyon 29er - 9.8 which comes with the M1800 wheels. Wonder if I will get the tubeless variety? Should know some time next week

Good Write up CG and thanks I am sure many of us wanted to see how this and newer DT 29 wheels perform.

2 killers for me for this wheelset - too heavy, and or too narrow. There is no way a wheelset this narrow should be 2000+ g and be running a 570g rim. It's a combination that only makes sense for Clydes that run narrower tires. At 570g the internal width should be at least 21 or better yet 23mm and be billed as a trail / All mountain wheelset.

Their rims are just too far off target weights and widths for now. Think the good folks at DT need to spend more time in North America talking and riding with us to see what were riding.

2012 is a bit better but what's with the 18mm internal widths(XR 400 XM 470)? Who runs 1.9-2.0 tires for real off road riding or racing, not many of us. The new M1800 is 1905g with a 19.6mm internal width rim which is acceptable but not really competitive and unlikely to sway many from other wheelsets or building their own.

They provide internals for Specialized and to me the Roval wheels in terms of weights, widths and intended use are years ahead of DT Swiss's own 29 er wheelsets.
