Editor’s Note: There has been much speculation and interest in the new Anthem full suspension bikes from Giant shod with the big wheels. We sent Grannygear over to investigate, and here is his report with images.
If there was any 29er full suspension bike that had the rumor mills buzzing with excitement this last year, it most likely was a big wheeled version of the Anthem X with Giant’s Maestro short link suspension. Then, once it truly was revealed and seen by spy lenses, etc, it made an appearance at Sea Otter under the control of Carl Decker and won the Super D. If that was not enough, Carl followed that up with a win at Downieville in the Combined AM event, where you need to finish well in both a 27 mile XC course and a 15 mile DH course on the same bike.
Now, the Anthem X 29er 1, 2, and 3 are hitting dealer showrooms now. We took a drive over to Giant North America HQ and spoke to Andrew Juskaitis about the new bike. Remember that I wrote an opinion piece that put out the thought that 100mms of front and rear travel was the sweet spot for 29ers. That, IMO, is an excellent balance point that, depending on the build of the parts and the angles of the bike’s geometry, you can have a bike that would perform very well in a huge percentage of the world’s riding terrain under nearly any rider.
The intended venue of the Anthem X would be an XC, endurance, race, 24 hour, light to medium duty trails situation. The Maestro suspension has a very loyal following and if Giant did their homework translating that around the bigger wheels, and I imagine they did, then this bike should be a winner. The medium size of the Anthem X 29er 1, with a bottle cage and no pedals (it was a demo bike) with the Maxxis Crossmark 2.1s F/R was 26lbs and a couple of ounces extra. Not bad at all really, considering the price.
There have been some doubts cast on internet forums about the long chain stays (18.2”). If this were a hard tail, I would agree that it would be a deal killer for me, but on an full suspension bike…well, I give that some grace as things are a bit different there. And, in any case, you do need to take the entire bike as a whole before too much judgment gets passed.

I shot some pics of the rear tire clearance, which is quite generous. You could run a pretty good sized tire back there. This is a Crossmark 2.1 in the photos.
The front rotor is 185mm across all 3 models, something that I have come to appreciate on 29ers, especially ones that can go as fast as this bike will.
The hubs are now a DT Swiss based hub as DT Swiss is the new ‘hub partner’ for Giant. That is also a good thing. I was told that the rear hub is compatible with DT Swiss parts for upgrades, etc.
The rims are a new Giant branded item, the P-XC29 2. I was told it was tubeless capable with Stans tape, etc, but I have not confirmed that with Stans. The last time that was quoted from Giant regarding the rims on the prior test bike, the XTC 29er-1 hardtail, turned out to be a bit off the mark, but those were a different extrusion.
The shaped rocker is a really good looking and the polished frame on the Anthem X 29er 1 is very shiny-shiny and looks great behind the blue accent pieces of anodized aluminum in the pivots, seatposts, etc. I was told the polishing is done by hand.
We are slated to be riding one version or another of an Anthem X 29er by the time Interbike is over, so stay tuned.

Sweet looking bikes
I have mixed feelings about Giant but really like the Maestro ride. The 100mm 26″ Anthem is a very good all around XC bike. Can’t wait to ride one of these, then the Tomac Diplomat.
I have a 26″ Anthem X and it’s a fabulous bike for all round trail riding and XC racing. I love it. Will be interesting to see how this bike rides. maybe I can talk “The Boss” into letting me have one, although the Niners RIP 9 is just sooo sweet!
Probably my next mtn bike. In another few years. Had the original ’06 Anthem and loved it. Demoed an Anthem X and it was even better.
the matched annodizing accents, blue cable housings and polished frame look spectacular. Giant has really lifted its game aesthetically
hope she rides as good as she looks.
bravo Giant. 29er duallies are now mainstream.
@professed – I think they went over the top on all the color coordination. The blue cable housing is too much IMO. But, to each his own, can’t please everyone. I’d still ride it. I think the polished frame looks awesome, but is probably a PITA to maintain. I like the white bike a lot too.
Pity it’s already being recalled
Have placed an order, but the ETA is looking pretty steep!
Ihear there are/were only about 30 bikes on the first production run. i was told the top tube and seat tube junction was too thin on first production.
giant has always been super reliable for me. i have had anthems, xtc’s and my current trance x for 2 years with no problems at all.
i will be getting the new anthem x 29er 1 as soon as i can! can’t wait!
What rotor is that? Giant-specific? I must have a set!
No 2 x 10? Any other details, ie. tapered head tube? geometry? prices?
ok, just checked the website, looks like a tapered head tube! Definitely no 2 x 10, no other specs or geometry listed.
My neighbor test rode one and loved it, but he said he had a lot of pedal strikes due to its low bottom bracket. I understand pre-order demand has been huge. Hot seller for sure.
@all
Prices:
Anthem X 29er 1: $3675
Anthem X 29er 2: $2900
Anthem X 29er 3: $2350
Geo:
71/73 across the sizes which are S (16″), M (18″), L (20″), and XL (22″). TTs run 22.6″, 23.4″, 24.2″ and 25″ respectively.
SO on the XL is 32.3″, so be ready with long legs on this one. Sorry, I meant to measure BB heights and I forgot. It is not in the book, either.
grannygear
32.3″ SO ain’t all that bad on an XL…..
The BB height for a Large X3 is 32.5cm.
@Sam…12.8″? Well, that does not sound all that low. That is what the Tall Boy is and only a 1/4″ lower than the Epic Carbon 29er.
Thanks.
grannygear
weighed a med. x3 @ 29 lb 4oz w/pedals today
took one out the other day myself from the shop and it was fabulous guys. too bad there breakin right now but the top tube is def a little small…….But i recommend everyone buy one. There vedry sickkkkk
What about Trance X 29er? Any plans?
I’m very interested in this bike…
As it turns out, it looks like this will be the bike I’ll race off-road in 2011. I’m very stoked.
The blue anno is so 2005
On the polished frame can those decals be removed? Also what is the word on BB height? Strikes. internet bloggers complaining about it but no ride tests yet?
Own 2 in South Africa. They are awesome.Did 67,9km/h on gravel downhill this morning. Never fealt unsafe.
Made both bikes tubeless a month ago with Stan’s tape. Works fine with tubeless ready tyres. I had to limit pressure to 2 Bar otherwise tyre slipped off the rim…..was it the soap I used to slip on the tyre?
Anyone get a chance to ride both the Anthem and Tallbooy?
Rode a Tallboy and loved it, but I’m a big Giant fan and have a Reign running a 150mm fork. I’m considering making the switch to 29″ wheels as I felt the Tallboy definitely excelled for my type of riding. How does the Anthem compare to the Tallboy? I notice people consider the Tallboy to be more of a trail bike? How about the Anthem?
I also had an Anthem 26″ and liked it, but used it primarily for XC racing. Head Angle felt a bit steep and suspension wasn’t as “plush.” Is the 29″ the same? W/ a 120mm fork?
In response to singlering:
It’s definitely plusher than the 2007 Anthem and is MUCH more neutral handling. I own the X1 and I love it. Hope this helps!
Are there sealed bearing in the Rear Linkage system? Can’t seem to find the answer anywhere…
From what I’ve been told, all of the main pivots are on bearings, as is the center pivot of the rocker. The ends of the rocker (at the seatstays and the top of the damper) are on bushings, as is typical). I have not disassembled my Anthem X-29 1 to verify the truth of this, but I believe that to be true based on what I’ve observed.
I just got a 2011 Anthem X 29er. I had a trek 1996 trek y-11, b.ack in the day. The cranks were part of the rear swing arm. It was not a good design. I changed to a hard tail with a Bomber front shock. Now I have the 29er. This bike is so smooth. Shimano shifting is crisp. The bike rides as good as it looks. It did seem the cranks it rocks more than normal. On the other hand thou, being low makes you feel like your nestled between the wheels. Its nice to feel part of the bike, rather than sitting on top of the bike. The geometry is spot on. This bike rocks and the price is awesome. Perfect for nasty Nevada trails. Thanks Giant!
