Editor’s Note: Grannygear is in Colorado and has filed this preliminary report with some images from Specialized’s dealer and Press camp. Let’s take a look at some 2011 Specialized 29″ers!
Well, nothing like traveling since 05:30 in the morning to fuzz up the brain, but here are some pics and notes from tonight’s after dinner cruise through the halls. My notes may me a bit off here, so if I get a details wrong, I will make up for it later.
The EVO program is quite interesting. Imagine an off the rack bike as what it is…normal spec. Then, put it in the hands of a shop rat or a customer with a desire to tweak and you often get either a racier approach…maybe a 1×9 drivetrain with faster tires, etc, or the other way – put a longer travel fork and bigger tires on it, maybe a Command Post and wider h-bars, etc. In a nutshell, Specialized is doing that with many bikes across the line.
For instance, these pics show an Epic in the EVO ‘R” flavor with a 1×10 set-up, etc. The two Epics together show the same bike in Race and Trail form. The EVO Trail has bigger tires, a 120mm fork, and the drop on Command Post. Also, all Epics are 100mm rear sus travel, so I was told. Note: Some bikes shown may not be 29ers, but it applies.
The show would not be complete without a light bike hanging on a scale somewhere, so here is the S Works 29er Epic in a size medium. Look out Superfly 100!
As well, the Epic Comps will be available in aluminum frames.
The Epics all get the 142+ rear hub/axle interface, and although the 142mm will be an industry standard, Specialized took it a step further and widened the hub flanges even more by moving the cassette outboard and the brake side hub flange closer to the rotor. This is found on the Roval wheels, and possibly more…not sure yet. It is not on the Stumpjumper FSRs or HTs IIRC.
The new carbon seat stays on the hardtail Stumpjumpers are Jenny Craig influenced this year. Note the size compared to my index finger. Svelte, indeed. But, check out the top tube as seen from the riders point of view on the Stumpy Expert 29er. Ooooo!!
A bike that has really peaked my interest is the Camber 29er, ready to be purchased by weekend warriors everywhere at a starting price of $2050. – $2900.00 dollars in two models.
Sorry for the grainy pics….my camera is not so hot indoors! Tomorrow the riding begins and we get down to it.

Finally! When will these babies be for sale at retail stores?
Does that S-Works Epic have the carbon rims on it?
Any news on the Renegade tire?
@dman
The Epic S Works does have the carbon rims. It is wearing the Renegade tires too. I am not sure if the tires I saw were production models but if they were, the graphics were so subtle that I could barely read them in the dim hall lighting. I know they were re-designed to increase the knob depth based on test rider input, so we hope to have a set soon to test.
I will try and remember to ask about dates, but earlier in the day I was talking to a Spechy rep and the time period of Sept/Oct was tossed out regarding the Camber, at least. Don’t hold me to it.

bleep! bleep! and bleep! I’m sensoring myself for you GT. The top tube view of that 29er Stumpjumper Expert is awesome. I hear that the weave like that is more for looks than anything else, but man, it works with thos big fat ribbons woven together.
So, to add some usefulness to my posting, I’ll add a question. Is that weave just for appearance? The through thickness of the tube is not done entirely like that, is it?
@ kurti_sc, that weave looks just like my Scott Ransom. On the Ransom it is just a cosmetic layer, so I assume the same here.
GG, please more pics of the Stumpys!
Any shots of the 29er S-works HT? Specifically if those fancy sliders Colt from Cyclingdirt.org caught a glimpse of made it to production? How about the ’11 Stumpy HT?
If you can see the weave of the carbon, it’s a cosmetic layer. The pre-preg composites that make up the bulk of the frame usually use a dark grey epoxy. It’s not very attractive.
Chips, are Sp the first to make proper wider hubs for 29″ers?
I will spend some quality time with the Stumpy HT tomorrow, hopefully. Today was filled with other bikes…on premium singletrack….in the Rockies….with a chair lift. It could be much worse than this.
As far as the other questions, I will try to find out.

Ooooh – EVO R. What is the gearing on that 1 x 10 set-up?
You will need to test one of these.
Take the flash off your camera and raise the ISO setting for better results. Nice bikes though I’m a bit worried about the wider rear hub standard, that might effect my next bike purchase.
Here is a correction to the Camber pricing: Camber Pro 29er: MSRP $2900
Camber Elite 29er: MSRP $2050

Is there a S-works Stumpy FSR with brain in carbon 140mm travel just like a 26er version? If not why not?
Are the Cambers in the picture above all 29ers? Thanks
@Gary
Hmmm, pretty sure just the front one. There are only two Camber 29r models, the Elite and the Expert level. More on the Camber coming up.

Thanks Granny for all the good info. I am in the market for a Epic 29er. I will probably only be able to do the Aluminum Comp 29er for budget reasons. I loved the review of the carbon expert as I ride a XL too. Could you please tell me are the green and red versions of the Epic aluminum 29er the same in spec or are the bike different spec levels? Thanks so much.
@Need-A-29er
The Lime/Black and Silver/Black in the Alu Comp are the same bike component wise.

Now if I could get an Expert in the Evo carbon weave I’d have my order in yesterday.
