way late to the game here, but I think ChrisB has a bunk shop, or at least a bad mechanic. I'm ridiculously impressed with the Comp I just picked up, a '10 model. Couldn't find a better value.

Im on my 5th Specialized bike in the last 12 years and must say I have always been a big fan of Specialized. I love them! They warrantied my Roubaix Pro when the aluminum bb shell started separating from the carbon and did it in a timely manner.
My most recent purchase a Stumpjumper comp 29er I have not been as satisfied with. The hub on the rear wheel keeps falling apart. Im poping spokes. the spokes keep loosening. and what the heck is up with the Avid brakes they keep putting on them. My LBS has worked on the brakes a dozen times in the past 4 months and just cant get it right. Front brake pulses like its losing stopping power and the rear makes the most horrid noise that vibrates the whole bike and they cant get the rotor to stop rubbing. Check out the reviews on MTBR and you will see hundreds or post with these same issues.
Is Specialized now more concerned with making a buck than putting out a solid product? Are they getting away from the great customer service which made them a solid company?
My LBS keeps getting the run around on new replacement parts. Anybody have any advice???
Im tired of taking my bike to the bike shop after every ride and dont think I should have to buy new brakes or new name brand wheels to replace the ones on the bike that are only 4 months old.

I have the Epic Carbon 29er hardtail. It is the best bike I have ever owned. It is an amazing bike. Everywhere I ride my lap times have decreased by over 15% compared to the full suspension 26" Specialized 2006 Epic FSR bike I was riding previously.

@Scott Justesen: Well, I work in a bike shop, Scott, and this phenomenon is not unknown to me. In fact, I am quite familiar with it, being nearly your weight. ;)

It might also interest you to know that at Twenty Nine Inches we are more often than not criticized for being too plebian in our selection of review and test bikes and components. (For an example of this, see the comments in this post:( http://www.twentynineinches.com/2009/12/29/top-ten-29er-products-of-09-salsa-cycles-fargo/ )

And your other idea- about having a person like you test a bike to see if it would hold up? Yeah- we did that too. Check out this post on the Giant XTC 1 where Grannygear let a buddy of his test ride the bike for a while: http://www.twentynineinches.com/2009/10/16/giant-xtc-29er-what-others-have-to-say-part-ii/

I think that you'll find that Twenty Nine Inches is much more in tune with what you are proposing than you might have thought. I don't think we are at all focused on "top end bikes" as you say the other "numerous magazines out there" are.

Certainly, we cover "top end bikes", that I won't deny, but we have a rich history in entry level and mid priced offerings as well. (Look for my upcoming test on the Soul Cycles Dillinger frame and fork soon as an example)

I hope you continue to check out Twenty Nine Inches in the future and I thank you for taking the time to comment. :)
