Geax Barro Race 29″er Tire: On Test
March 16th, 2009 by Guitar TedTwenty Nine Inches just took delivery of some Geax 29″er tires. This time it is the Barro Race with the TNT bead and sidewalls. TNT is Geax’s version of tubeless ready that they call “Tube-No Tube”, thus the “TNT” moniker. The Barro Race is billed as a cross country racing tread or hardpack trail tire that features a 2 inch width. The tread is quite open and the knobs are arranged on a chevron type pattern.

The Barro Race is Geax’s second tread pattern for 29″ers.

The Barro Race will be available in three versions. This is the TNT version.
The Barro Race will come in three versions: The folding bead version, which will be the lightest at around 425 grams, the TNT version, which weighed 630 grams on our digital scale, and the UST version which will weigh more yet, probably in the mid 700 gram range. Geax promised us that the Barro Race would be a “true two incher”, so we will get to mountng these up, tubeless of course, and we will report back. Stay tuned………..

When should we be able to purchase these? The 425g folding version sounds excellent.
Lighter than the super-minimalist Crows? Wow.
The 29″ TnT tire I want Geax to make is the 2.3 Barro Marathon. It has softer rubber than Geax’s XC compound. They could even make it in a 2.2- it’s my fave all-arounder in 26″ (though it wears kinda quick). Geax makes seriously underrated tires.
Does it suffice to run an ordinary tyre 425 grams with tubeless liquid or TNT version is minimum for tubeless application?
Jeff: The tires should be available in a few weeks.
Cloxxki: Yeah, and these actually have knobs! Go figure….
t0m: Look for a bigger Geax trail tire to be introduced in 29″er size real soon. (Hint: “meow”
)
Davidcopperfield: The Barro Race folding bead is meant to be run with tubes. Yes, the TNT is the lightest designed to be run tubeless.
Good to know on the availability, thanks GTed.
While Geax suggests the TnT version as the lightest for tubeless use, the regular folding model Saguaro has been one of the most reliable (and easiest to set up) tires for tubeless use.
i run these on my Gordo’s and i love them.
I have jad the chance to ride both 29er by GEAX currently available in folding and TNT and the real advantage with TNT besides easy inflation is the ability to run extremely low pressures (at 85 kg I have ridden the Saguaro down to 1,4 bar) without risking blow offs or fear burping. Has anyone tried the same on a converted folding – not good, very unstable. The Barro Race requires more pressure due to the smaller size but is an extremely capable race tire.
Ps: For those whishing for a larger tire with a more aggressive tread – hang in there, it will not be long, but it will definetely be worth it.
May the above be said about TNR vs UST? UST will be better at lower pressure than TNT, won’t it?
Davidcoperfield: UST has a stiffer sidewal, certainly. I would think very low pressures would be attainable, but at the expense of more weight. I believe the best balance of weight, tire pressure, and performance is with TNT.
