Sea Otter Classic: Day Two

April 18th, 2008 by Guitar Ted

Well, it’s been a very busy day today. Lots of information and images coming, so please be patient! (I type waaay slow!)

Reba redesigned 29

In a somewhat anti-climatic presentation, (evidenced by comments made about previously posted “spy shots”) SRAM introduced the redesigned 29″er Reba. First off, it’s not the fork alot of you are looking for, but it is the benchmark XC/Trail 29″er fork once again.

Reba thru axle: Maxle Light

With the overdue addition of a through axle fork to Rock Shox’s 29″er fork line, the Reba will be a much stiffer platform. Utilizing the new “Maxle Light”, a slightly less stiff but much lighter version of the original Maxle, this fork will stiffen the Reba chasis significantly. Also incorporating features seen in the recently redesigned SID, the Reba will have the hollow lowers and bulge on the lowers with a slight modification to the inner workings to allow for not only a stiffer chassis, but no weight penalty.

Reba controls

The travel options will be 80mm, 100mm both with a quick release axle, and the 120mm version only in the Maxle Light through axle. The travel in any of the forks can be adjusted with spacers, but the location of those spacers has changed. Now instead of being on top of the damper, they are under it to help avoid changing the travel performance/feel when you change travel. It still is called “All Travel”, but it is a bit different.

Haro's new

Here’s a new sub-1000 dollar hard tail from Haro. It’s aluminum and uses the same geometry as Haro’s popular “Mary” line up of 29″ers. Priced at about $800.00, you get a great spec, and RST’s excellent M-29 fork color coded to match.

Ally 29

It also comes in a single speed flavor with an eccentric bottom bracket. It can be geared and come in two colors. A yellow and this excellent “Black and Tan” scheme. The single comes in at about $600.00 and mimics much of the spec of the geared bike with Hayes mechanical brakes, Kenda Nevegal tires, and WTB rims and saddles.

SRAM's anodized experimentations

While not a 29″er product, I can’t let this one slip by without a comment. Greg Herbold, SRAM’s marketing/test pilot dude, pulled this, (literally) from under his shirt today to show. SRAM is not saying if it will ever see production, but judging from Greg’s reactions and some of us media wonk’s, there is hope. Yes folks, purple anodized parts are back!

Stay tuned for more.

Editors Note: A mistake was made in editing the original post in regards to the travel of the Reba Maxle Light equipped fork. We stated it as being 100mm. It should have read 120mm. We apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused.

Some misinformation about Reba travel. 120mm will be available with the 20mmTA version. See vid here: http://seaotter.mtbr.com/2008/04/19/rockshox-rolls-out-all-new-reba-and-revelation/

    Glurg, purple anodized, help.

    What is the offset?

  6. 6 Guitar Ted

Jared: RST uses a 44mm offset, the rigid fork mimics this.
