Origin 8 and Continental Tire Updates
October 28th, 2007 by Guitar TedThe Origin 8 Scout, which was released in small numbers this past summer, was recently updated. Sources tell us that the first run of frames had a complaint or two regarding the tire clearance in the rear. To help address this, Origin 8 has gone from the original Scout’s 68mm bottom bracket shell to a 73mm shell width. Also, they have implemented a CNC machined chainstay yoke in steel to accomodate larger tires. Look for the updated frames to made available sometime this winter.
As reported from our Interbike coverage, Continental is going to introduce new 29″er models in a couple of different sizes in two of their new “families” of tires. They are not, however, going to be making them UST tires, as the pictured placards from Interbike seem to indicate. The 26 inch versions will have UST counterparts, but the 29″er versions will be of a “tubeless ready” variety, as I suspected. The word is that 29″er riders are not going to accept a “true UST tires weight”, which would be estimated to be in the neighborhood of 800-900 grams for a 2.1″ tire. I was told this would be due to the extra butyl rubber necessary to make the casing air tight. Those holding out for a true UST standard 29″er tire are going to have a long wait, it would seem.
More as we get the information……….

when are the new Contis going to be released? that Mtn King is Sweeet!
Desert9r: I was told to look for them in December.
will the scout’s still feature the super short chainstay length - or wil the new design impact that feature?
MMcG: No changes to the geometry that I am aware of. Just making room for bigger tires is all.
What’s the rest of the scout made of?
Dirt: The Scout I speak of is CromMoly. There is also an aluminum version coming as well.
Expect more and more tires to come as “tubeless ready” partially due to the acceptance of sealant and partially due to the relative shortage and cost of butyl rubber. Butyl prices have skyrocketed of late and there is no end in sight.
Info- F@#$!!!!, Thus GD SUVs! tubeless is such a pain in the A**!
Desert9r - That is certainly part of it as well as China and other countries making their presence felt in the supply & demand of basically everything. The metals market got hit hard a few years ago with stainless & structural steel prices going crazy and the same thing is happening here. Companies will be looking for ways to use less butyl in all types of tires and tubes and of course the bicycle market is just one small piece of the pie.
Butyl… that’s just a fun word to say… byooooo tiiillllll
Wheee!
Is that picture of the 29″ Mountain King accurate? It looks qute a bit different than the prototype pic. shown here in September.
Is that Origin 8 frame a SS frame? Hard to get a good look at the rear dropouts.
Chad: Indeed, the two are dissimilar. We may very well be looking at two entirely different models with the one being the Mud Queen and the other The Mountain King, because both are coming as 29″er models. Hot patches and details are sometimes sketchy before production models arrive.
GreenLightGo: It is indeed an SS frame with an integral derailluer hangar, much like a Soma Juice or Karate Monkey would have.
That last comment was left by me, by the way!
The Origin 8 Scout has a non-replaceable der hanger integrated in the horizontal drops. It is relatively cheap as it is built out of chromolly. Specs can be sussed here http://www.origin-8.com/ and the drop outs are featured here http://www.origin-8.com/scout.htm
Are the Origin 8 Scout Frames with the 73mm bb shells available?
Also, what was the widest tire that could be fit in the old model (68mm bb shell) and still have the 16.75 chainstay length?
Thanks!!
Ottoreni: No, the new frames will not be made available until the current 68mm shell frames are depleted.
You can use up to a true 2.1″ in the original.
