SE Racing Stout 29″er On Test
October 17th, 2007 by Guitar Ted
Twenty Nine Inches has just taken delivery of a 2007 SE Racing Stout 29″er to test/review. We will be detailing out an “Out of the Box” post for you soon, so look for that coming up. We then will get some test rides on it to give you our first impressions and then it will go into long term test mode.
Twenty Nine Inches would like to thank SE Racing for this opportunity to test this rig. For some backround check out SE Racing’s site. If you don’t already know, SE Racing cut it’s teeth in the early days of BMX and has a rich and deep history in the sport. So, a 29″er?
Well, yeah, a 29″er. Back in 2005 SE Racing quietly introduced it’s first 29″er, the “BM Flyer”, to the big wheeled freaks. It caught some early attention for it’s unique and curious backwards bent seat tube and bright orange color. In 2007, the bike was redesigned and renamed the Stout. SE Racing also does a few fixie 700c bikes as well. Check it out in the meantime. We’ll be back with the “Out of the Box” post real soon!

The onlt thing that comes to mind is that Bow-Wow song “GHETTO” Girls.. have you guys ever heard that song? It’s a good one…… or that Elvis song In the “GHETTO” an oldie but a goodie.
Did you ever hear of the Gangster rap group “GETO” Boys? They kick ass too!
I sit alone in my four cornered room, starin’ at faces…
Love that rig baby, can’t wait to hear about it.
It’s = it is.
I purchased one of these for riding in the Pine Barrens here in South Jersey (think lots of sand) so I could keep my other rigs out of the sand, and I figured the 29 wheels would help in the sand. Sand tears everything apart, so I wanted as few moving parts as possible. I only have one ride on it so far, but for an inexpensive rigid 29er, I am very happy so far. The bike handles very well and I really like the Maxxis Ignitor tires. For the price, it fits my needs well.
If I didn’t get such a good deal on the 2007, I think I would have waited for the 2008. The fork is less “Stout looking” and it looks like it may take bigger wheels (hard to tell from the pictures). The 2008 will also take disc brakes, but I wasn’t interested in that since I was looking for simple maintenance, although I was looking around for a better fork, and most of the rigid 29er forks are disc only, so that may be an issue. Hopefully this will change.
grammer police: Thanks, but I think you caught the meaning anyway, right?
bergjm: The forks from 2007-2008 would both clear big meats, so no worries there. The move to disc tabs necessitated the move from the original Landing Gear design. As for an aftermarket fork with canti studs, take a look at Origin 8. They offer a carbon legged version with canti studs that rides quite well according to my buddy Captain Bob.
Bushwick Bill says - “childs play —- —–” Chucky likes it.
Thanks for the insight about the fork. I will check it out. Enjoy riding the Stout!
I ordered one of these in March ‘07, I like it better than my XXIX, that is, after having the XXIX for a while, The XXIX can be gear, but only after, a new rear wheel (stock one Might fit 2 cassette cogs), and some other mods, where as the Stout comes with a 9-speed hub And cable stops, even though it is SS stock, And it comes with sliding dropouts, vs. the crappy EBB
Part-
Why I did not get it.
SE/Fuji’s Customer Service. (incl. Todd)
My LBS ordered the bike, SE said I would have it. 3weeks go by, no bike, SE said 1 more week, I cancelled the order, and bought the XXIX, 6 1/2 weeks after I ordered it, it got to the bike shop.
A few months went by, I thought that incident might have been a 1 time thing, I looked into the Stout, Draft and OM, having a few questions, I emailed them the questions, in a few emails, EVery time Todd, replied “check with you LBS”.
Don’t ya think, being owner manager(what every he is), he would know some answers to his own product?
Desert9r: Sorry to hear about your bad experience. Hopefully that’s not the rule.
And for what it’s worth, the Stout has track ends, not sliders. At least the ‘07 model does. The hanger piece is kind of a slider, I suppose, but not the drop out itself.
bergjm : try a Bontrager XR front tire for the sand. Be amazed. Soon I hope to report how the new Schwalbe Racing Ralphs behave themselves in whatever our weather throws at them.
Cloxxki: I will keep that in mind but I want to keep my Maxxis Ignitors for a while. I haven’t had them in sand yet but on dirt they are great. Thanks for the info.
Price???
Joe-
$500-ish
Price for the ‘08 model is $480.00 and the ‘07 is $470.00 MSRP
Ill take a 17″, which I will buy on ebay for $250 +/- 3 months into 2008 after some yahoo gets bored or yelled at for having too many bikes in the house/garage/bedroom
Joe: Uhh……you “could” do that. You could do that for any bike. That is, IF it showed up on e-bay. Pretty big if though.
GT is right, in the yr that I have known about the Stout, searching the internet, I saw 1 used for sale, for $400.
Man this thing rides great perfect for going up hills and Where I live they cost 400 bucks flat but I get a discount so now its like 350 Im stoked off this bike and cant wait to get one for my birthday . =D
