Big Wheeled Ballyhoo report, take two

June 27th, 2007 by Tim Grahl

“The Big Wheeled Ballyhoo could be the next Sea Otter”

“This event could be the midwest Pedro’s festival”

Those are both quotes from industry folks that were there.

“The Big Wheeled Ballyhoo makes you a better lover”

I said that.

The sponsors made the event possible. Buy their stuff. It’s good stuff.

Salsa Cycles

Gary Fisher Mountain Bikes

Niner Bikes

Raleigh Bicycles

Bike 29

SRAM/Rock Shox

Chrome Bags

Cliff Bar

And the exhibitors provided the sweetness…

Gary Fisher/Trek

And my report will mainly be my favorite pictures…

This is Steve from Niner realizing his minuscule 29 inch wheels are already obsolete next to the 36er.

Who the hell said cyclists are all skinny?

Say what you will about big bad corporate Fisher… but they keep on pushing that envelope…

Here’s Bobby from Salsa again. His new nickname is Shrek. I can’t imagine why.

Pimpin’ (in tights) ain’t easy and nobody does it like Brent from Twin Six.

Speaking of pimpin…

Jason from Salsa leading us ballyhooers in prayer

Ahhhh… drunk dancing.

When I try to wheelie a 26er I usually hurt myself. This was a long wheelie on +10 inches.

Sure, it was a big wheel event, but who can resist a limited edition pink Surly 1×1?

The event was a great time… for those 99.9% of you readers that didn’t make it, you aren’t gonna wanna miss next year. All of this year’s exhibitors will be back with way more fun and mayhem already in the works.

The pics don’t even come close to describing how cool and fun this thing was. I can’t imagine it being more fun, except more people there to enjoy it.

My highlight is meeting the lovely Katie from Salsa……..she’s a cutie. Kidding! She is a cutie but my highlight was really getting a chance to ride an El Mariachi. I rode that bike hard and it took it in stride. It most likely will be my next 29er…….probably ss though.

Thanks everyone that made the event what it was.

    Steve

Keep the photos and the write-ups coming. It also looks like this event wasn’t a total sausage-fest so that right there is a good thing.

Somebody who was lucky enough to ride the 36″er please review it for us! :-)

What bike and fork is Brent from Twin Six on in that picture?

  5. 5 MMcG

I believe that is the new Waltworks Twinsix frame and fork combo.

Go to the Twin Six site for more information.

He was on the Custom Stock Waltworks #1 for Twin 6. Amazing subtle details. Great bike… just as you would expect from Walt.

Will g-ted, (or other), please give us a review of the hifi 29er shown in pic? Thank you kindly.

    that’s Brent’s own Walt works.

The 36er was sweet but I dont think it would be totally practical for MTB riding.
It rode really well in the bumpy grass area though.
As far as the HiFi goes, I was totally impressed the bike was perfect with the genesis geometry. it descended and climbed very well but was still nice a stiff for some little bursts. I give it my two thumbs up.

Jordan…thanks for the hifi review…I’m getting weary of waiting for the bike…nice to hear from someone who’s already tried it. :)
