More Fox fork and Trek rumors

First off, here’s a picture of the Fox fork thats due out on the Trek bikes…
Plus I’m getting word that Trek isn’t doing a 29er but is expanding their 69er (29/26 hybrid) line. However Guitar Ted isn’t convinced that Trek is shunning the 29 inch platform. We’ll see…

It does seem as though Trek is playing around with the 69er concept, Travis Brown raced a geared 69er full suspension at NOVA… Fisher was the first major company to launch a line of 29ers, and though they are owned by Trek it is important to recognize that they are two separate entities from a design standpoint, furthermore Bontrager does work exclusively with Trek… but is in no way under ownership of Trek.
Trek makes forks? As in suspension forks? News to me. In no way is Bontrager under ownership of Trek? Not to be a d!ck but where do you guys get your information?

Well Chad, if you are involved in the industry in any way.. you would know that Bontrager is not owned by Trek… Furthermore, Bontrager has worked with manitou in the past developing the G2 offset on their forks for the Hi-Fi and are currently working with Fox.. If you’d like to check this information out you can call Trek and ask them for details on all of your burning quesitons
Scott, thanks for the calm, thoughtful reply. I guess I am confused because Trek bought the Bontrager “brand” out (when, mid-to-late-90’s or so?), then eventually ceased production of the Bontrager frames and (I thought) have since kept KB on board as a product designer and general “idea man”. So who “owns” the Bontrager brand now?
I figured that KB must have had something to do with the offset crown on the HiFi Manitou forks, like the crowns on the Rock Shox forks at the end of the “Santa Cruz” era bikes and for a while after the Trek buyout.
Trek owns Gary Fisher bikes, Bontrager components, Lemond bikes and Klein bikes. the Design teams are not entirely independant. I can’t presently find the link, but i’m pretty sure Fisher originally designed the fuel, but Trek got dibbs on it. I don’t have the article that stated that though, so it’s just rumour for now.

Sean, the Fuel, Sugar and Klein version (the name escapes me now-the bike that followed the Mantra) were all designed at the same time and were variations on a theme (basically a single-pivot without any link on the seat-or-chainstays by the dropout). I know that Trek truly “owns” the other brands, just like GM “owns” Cadillac, Chevy, Buick, et. al. They may have basic design freedom, etc. but Trek signs the checks, collects the dividends, and ultimately, makes the decisions. I still don’t quite get what Scott means by “Bontrager is now owned by Trek”.
Redline just announced that they will purchase Trek and all their other brands late 2007. Lance Armstrong is behind it all. He has fond childhood memories of BMX and Redline and pushed for the move threatening to change sponsors to Huffy if this demand is not met.
Also, Redline has announced the production of the future 49er…a 24 inch front wheel and a 29 inch rear wheel. It is mimicking the 50’s muscle car rake effect and should be extremely aerodynamic… can’t wait to ride the first of the prototypes. I am going to run it fully rigid with a pace 24er fork carbon up front. Other interesting news in the world of mergers…Diamond Back announced that they will be purchasing the rights to the 29er concept and push to outlaw them in the race circuits throughout the USA deeming them an “unfair advantage” in deep sand. If you haven’t figured out that this is all bogus…you are clueless!! Stop your bickering and just pedal damn it…….xoxo Niner
