Thule 916 T-2

Editors Note: From time to time we need to use some equipment that isn’t necessarily 29″er related, but comes in handy for our enjoyment of the big wheels. We will be passing on information regarding these products from time to time as “Recommendos”, in other words, these are products we think are really cool.

The Thule 916 T-2 bike hitch rack is now a vital part of my gear for enjoying mountain biking and is a very 29″er friendly product. The cool features of this rack include two ratcheting arms that clamp down on the front tires of two of your bikes front wheels while a cam activated strap and wheel block hold the rear tire down to the cross bar. Nothing to touch your frame and weird frame designs don’t prevent you from bringing your bike along on this rack either.

It takes all of about 30 seconds to load or unload a bike, so no futzing around when you are in a hurry. The bikes are solidly held in place and the threaded hitch pin keeps the rack from swaying around in the reciever hitch. Very reassuring when you are carting around your rigs, or thousands of dollars worth of test bikes!

When the bikes are off, the rack folds up and out of the way, so you don’t have to worry about parallel parking. The rack also lowers, when the bikes are on, out of the way just enough to allow access to the rear of most rigs. Optional features include locking cylinders for the ratcheting arms and a locking threaded hitch pin.

The Thule 916 T-2 bike hitch rack is available in 2″ or 1 1/4″ (917 model) reciever sizes and has a MSRP of $369.00. If you opt for the 2″ reciever hitch model there is a two bike add on for a total of a 4 bike capacity. That add on is model 918 and goes for a MSRP of $260.00. See your Thule dealer for more info!

the rack is absolutely amazing, Ive got the roof rack version of this by sportworks, now part of thule. You can pretty much put anybike you can think of on it. Some recumbents are the only bikes i havent seen go on it. I can put my 29er on it one sec, then take it off and put my downhill bike on it the next sec with no adjustments. This rack or the roof rack version is a definite must have for anyone that rides.

My riding buddy has a T-2. Works great for 29ers. I have an older sportworks mod and it is not 29er friendly. I have to deflate the front tire to get the “hook” over the front tire.

The only down side of the T-2 is it is either 1.5″ receiver OR 2″ If you have vehicles with both you have to figure out what kind of adapter to get and it will stick out the back a lot more. The old mod was more modular so you could change from 1.5″ to 2″ easily…..and make it a single bike rack.

Having said that the T-2 will suit most folks just dandy. Shop around for a good price.
