New Velocity 29″er Disc Only Rim

January 19th, 2007 by Guitar Ted

Velocity Blunt Wheels

Twenty Nine Inches has just taken delivery of a new wheelset featuring Velocity’s newest rim design for 29″ers. It’s called the “Blunt”, comes in 32 hole drilling, and weighs about 480 grams, according to Velocity. MSRP is slated to be $75.00 and should be available come spring time. My samples came built up with DT Swiss double butted spokes, brass nipples, and laced to XT 6 bolt disc hubs.

The rims are 28mm in width and a bit over 23mm in width from bead to bead. The idea is to give 29″er riders a tougher rim that spreads the tread out a little better for increased traction on the trail surface.

The rim sample I saw at Interbike was powder coated blue, but as of now, all I know is that these will be available in silver or black. More information will be coming, so I will update this as soon as I get that to share with you all.

These rims look pretty sharp, a really big “Velocity” sticker gives them a racer look. The profile of the rim looks like a bulged, lower profile triangle shape that shouldn’t collect much trail debris/mud. I’ll have these mounted up with tires, rotors, cassette, rim tape, and tubes over the weekend and be back with a first ride impression and more information next week.

ooo….cool option…not sure I’m a fan of the billboard sized graphics but nice. any word on availability?

Padre: Available through fine shops like The Path ( wink!) by this spring. And the graphics are easily removed, so de-badging these shouldn’t be a problem.

…what type of joint does it utilize? Pinned?

  5. 5 Guitar Ted

jncarpenter: Pinned and sleeved. The joint is very tight and well done. It almost is invisible from the outside of the rim. At least on my samples. Velocity typically does this and has maintained a high quality over the years that I’ve been familiar with them. I’ve built wheels using their rims since the mid-nineties with no issues.

..thanks Ted. Any idea on ERD?

jncarpenter: I’ll get you that info, it’s not with me here. Check out the comments here later and I’ll have that posted.

jncarpenter; That info will be delayed! I had it, but inadvertantly deleted it, and am waiting for a reply from Velocity.

I didn’t build these wheels, just as a reminder, so I haven’t a clue what the ERD is at this time. Sorry!

Nice… I love Velocity stuff! Anyone know if they’re available anywhere in Europe? I can’t seem to find a vendor of any type and these look like exactly the rim I might be looking for.

It sounds like this will be a great alternative to the Rhynolites as a bulletproof wheel. Only difference, they will be 100-120 grams lighter per wheel!!

Anyone see a problem with these for a 230 lb rider, who does singletrack and fireroads on a Karate Monkey 2×9? No jumping logs or drops.

CB: I’m 240 lbs and no problems so far. Stay tuned here, as there will be an updated report coming soon on these rims.

Rockin! Thanks Ted. I’ll get my alcohol ready to take off the decals…. :)

    Any updates? Are they eyelet’d?

  14. 14 Guitar Ted

finger51: The rims are not eyeleted, but Velocity uses a beefed up extrusion in that area to reinforce the spoke bed. This is a technique they have preferred to use throughout the time I have been familiar with Velocity going back to the early 90’s. They seem to work fine in that regard.

An update on the wheels is forthcoming. I put in a good, rough test ride on them last Friday and with a couple more runs, I’ll be ready to say on about them.
