What’s a strong 29er tire?

January 3rd, 2007 by Tim Grahl

Are you aware of a heavier, stronger sidewalled 29er tire so it doesn’t get pinch flats easy? This tire is needed for 29er mountain Unicycle so the weight is all on one wheel and I am currently running a Kenda Klaw and try to find an air pressure that isn’t to hard and wont pinch flat on drops.

Schwalbe Little Albert has the stiffest sidewall I know of. In the past, I’ve had serious sidewall issues. Now that I’m running the Little Albert nearly all sidewall related issues are gone. I love this tire.

Isn’t it also the narrowest tire on the market? On pictures it always looks really low profile. Less sidewall, less vertical pinch protection.
Did you look at the WTB Exiwolf?

Try setting it up with Stans no tubes. Both my son and i have not had a flat since using that system.

Stan’s really does do the trick well! But in lieu of doing that, I think the Exi would be an ideal Uni tire. Their nice big volume would let you set a pretty decent pressure. I just started running one (a freebie) on my rigid Niner up front at 25 psi. The tread pattern sucks for winter riding where I live and ride, but I’m liking it other than that.

Aren’t you like way the crap off the ground on a 29er uni? I have a Sun 28 inch uni that I put a motoraptor on just for fun and the seat hits me about navel high. How is that off road?

The Klaw is one of the smaller 29er tires. Any of the Nevegal, Rampage, Exiwolf, Ignitor, Karma (2.2) should hold up better. None have a “tough” casing. A FR/DH 29er tire does not exist yet.

I blew a tubed Bontrager Jones off of my front rim yesterday. I am concerned to say the least, if I had been going faster it could have hurt. Does anybody else have experience with this? Is it likely due to a weak sidewall or bead? I weigh about 220, and want to make sure my tires stay on the rims.

I bought a Raleigh XXIX last December and was very satisfied with the WTB Exiwolfs (2.3) that came standard on the bike. I only had 2 flats in the 10 months the tires were on the bike, mostly because I run very low pressure (normally around 28-30 psi, but I got one flat when running around 22 psi and bombing down a hill). I had to replace the Exi’s 2 months ago due to the tread being comletely worn off. I ride about 8-10 hours on weekends on very rocky, rooty and technical terrain. I just put a set of Rampage’s on and have had 2 flats since - these were caused by thorns, so it’s just bad luck. I would recommend the Exi’s or Rampage any time. The Rampage has better grip, but I believe WTB’s line up of tire’s has more puncture resistance. IMO nothing beats WTB tires when it comes to toughness.
