GT Peace 9er: Update
December 19th, 2006 by Tim GrahlIf you recall from my last post, I was having some issues with how the Peace was responding in turns. I expanded my cockpit by moving the seat back a good bit and have given myself a few more rides to get used to how the bike was handling. I’m glad to say that my cornering on this bike has significantly improved. I think it was a combination of being a bit to far over the handlebars and switching from the Carver 96er with front suspension. I had to get used to riding it like a 29er.
I don’t have a car rack… I carry my bikes around with me in my Chevy Cavalier. I put the back seat down, take the front wheel off and slide the bike in the trunk. I like doing this so I don’t have to constantly take my bike in and out of my basement. I can just keep it in the car with me and cart it wherever I go.
Where am I going with this? Well the stock tires on the Peace 9er are WTB ExiWolf 2.3″. The front tires will not fit through the front V-brakes even when opened up all the way. Every time I pull the wheel off or put it on, I have to pop the brake pads out and then reinstall them. Extremely frustrating. I realize this won’t effect 99% of you the way it does me, however I want the other 1% of you to know about this idiosyncrasy.

That’s good to know. I don’t use bike racks either (since you should be out riding it instead of carting it around.) But, since I’d be using it for commuting and everything else, I’d prolly have skinnier tires on it in the first place.
Yeah it’s definitely not a huge problem, especially if you have a set of 2.2s or smaller you’d rather ride.
Have you ever considered just deflating the front tire a little, rather than popping the brake pads out?
I guess… but wouldn’t mini-pumping it take about the same amount of time?
I guess so if a mini pump is your only means…. If you’re doing this because you’re using a car to haul the bike around, why not put a floor pump in the car as well? I have to deflate my front tire by about 15 to 20 lbs get the swing arm on my rack to hold my 29″er. I definitely would be looking for another way if a mini pump is the only means for airing the tires. My luck with popping brake pads and generally messing with brakes & etc at a trail head is not good…..
I dunno…all braking systems should be engineered to accomodate any tire the forks/stays can fit. Seems like strkie-one to me.
any chance you’ve weighed the bike?…i’m very interested in this bike for several reasons, not the least of which is the price…but i can’t seem to find the weight anywhere…
thx
I am interested in this bike because of price, looks – i really think it´s a beautiful bike – and the good reviews it gets for it´s handling. But having little experience from singlespeed riding off-road (I have a singlespeed which I use in town and on tarmac) I am a bit worried if I will find it too limited. (I live in a hilly area in Norway). My question is: Would it be possible to upgrade it with a rear derailleur if I find I would need it? Is it possible to fit a deraillurhanger in the rear drop-outs? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks
it’s 28 lbs for the medium.

if you want to use a derailer, get the raleigh. There’s no hanger on the GT, the only way to make it work is with a Hone or Saint hub and derailer combo. That’ll make it much more expensive, and add alot of weight.
