WTB Introduces WeirWolf LT 29

December 11th, 2006 by Tim Grahl

Here’s the press release out of WTB for their new 29er tire…

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 11, 2006 – Mill Valley, CA

Wilderness Trail Bikes, Inc., a world leader in tire technology, is proud to introduce the WeirWolf LT 29– the ultimate large-volume, twenty-nine-inch tire. The 2.55-inch width and minimal tread make it a fastrolling, tight-handling monster of a tire that will swallow anything in its path.

WTB introduced the world’s first 29-inch mountain bike tire in the fall of 1999. That original Nano Raptor 29 sparked a revolution in the world of serious, off-road riding. Now, WTB offers another industry first with the WeirWolf LT 29. Like the 26-inch model, the WeirWolf LT 29 combines a large-volume, 58-millimeter casing with fast-rolling, low-profile tread.

The very first run of this groundbreaking design went to Quality Bicycle Products on Monday, November 20. The Bloomington, Minnesota-based distribution company sold the entire shipment of 200 tires in just over a single day! If these sales are any indication, the WeirWolf LT 29 is set to become the dominant tire of the twenty-nine-inch wheel movement.

The WeirWolf LT 29 combines a folding Aramid bead with a lightweight, 2.55-inch casing that resists pinch flats, stays stiff and confident in corners and devours trail chatter like nothing else on the market. And the performance advantages don’t end at the casing. The WeirWolf LT 29 features low profile, 60adurometer tread that enables minimal rolling resistance, while the prominent side knobs instill confidence during hard cornering.

“Twenty-nine-inch tires are already superior in terms of momentum, rolling over obstacles and tracking, said Mark Slate, WTB’s vice president of product development. “This tire just puts the icing on the cake with its wide, supple casing and fast-rolling tread.

The WeirWolf LT 29 is available in the Race version, with folding Aramid bead and 2.55-inch width. At 940 grams, it is one of the lightest in its category. The sophisticated tread design, along with the DNA rubber compound (60a durometer), provides an unparalleled combination of speed and traction in dry and dusty to loose and loamy conditions. MSRP $55.

The WeirWolf LT 29 is just one of WTB’s five new cutting-edge tire designs, making 2007 a milestone
year in the company’s illustrious 25-year history.

I don’t think these tires will beat out the Exiwolf in sales. I’ve read the reviews. Besides the size, they haven’t really talked up the 29er Weirwolf. However it is winter and this being the largest 700c tire available, methinks that these have a great application as a floater. Add some screws and this should be a nice tire for both snow and ice.

BTW WTB, thanks for all the 29er attention.

Fast as hell. Fatter casing than you think. Run it on the front and run it low pressure, fools!. Side knobs eat singletrack corners for breakfast.

-kw has a great point. Side knobs. It’s what the Exi lacked and one of the things I disliked about that tread.

The reports I have seen have been favorable on this tire. I think it’s got alot of great applications. I look forward to running one on the front of my single speed rigid bikes soon.

I would think this would make for a kickass front tire especially in dry/hardpack conditions!

@ 940g why talk about light? Why not beef them up and call it a DH tire?

Seriously, is 940 grams really considered light? What other tires are in the category they refer to? Not bashing on the tire….in fact it looks like the perfect tire for my rigid Walt. 940 just seems a bit chunky compared to most of the tires I’ve seen people rolling.

Yeah, 940 grams is a bit much (even though it is a big fat tire!) when one is used to running around 650 grams. Depending on your ride it might just be the ticket….

Sure maybe 940 grams is hefty compared to other 29er tires… but what tires are you comparing them to? These are 2.55 inches wide. At that width I’m thinking the 940 gram mark isn’t to awful.

Tim, the comment was in general, not a relation to the size. For a big fatty tire 940g might be fine, but not all of us want to run rubber that big. I’m pretty happy with my Bontragers and IRC tires in the 2.1-2.2 size range (and yes I do run fully rigid on my SS) and don’t feel a need to run wider tires (I’m 200+ lbs running 25 psi).

I have an ExiWolf that came with a wheel purchase but have yet to run it in the front. And if we are talking about front, then it’s not such a big deal anyway. And to be quite honest, I haven’t compared specs on the net for different sized tires. Maybe I’ll go hang out at Shiggy’s site…

    Hugs and kisses!

I think the first shipment out there showed lower weights than that 940g. who can confirm here?

60 durometer rubber? I’m shaving the knobs off to have my own lightweight beach race tires! Big Apples 2.35 (57mm casing) are just under 1kg. Shaved, WW’s may be
