We need a name for this thing…

December 7th, 2006 by Tim Grahl

Last week we announced the 29er meetup we are doing in June, however Guitar Ted and I seem to lack the creative capacity to come up with a good name for this thing. We are both stuck on “Mid-West 29er Festival” but that seems so boring. Here’s a few others that have been thrown out…

  • Big Wheeled Balleyhoo
  • 29er Love In
  • Big Wheels in the Cornfields
  • Fellowship of the Wheel: a Gathering of 29″ers

You have any better ideas?

Oh…you’ve got to go with Big Wheels in the Cornfield. It plays up the midwestern thing, sets expectations that it’s not some international conference, and tells you that it’s not just any mtb festival, but one for 29ers – and it sounds fun!

    Just my two cents.

Big Wheeled Balleyhoo reminds me of the Echo and the Bunnymen song Bedbugs and Ballyhoo http://www.lyricscrawler.com/song/150209.html

My vote is for “Big Wheels in the Cornfield”

I like the ring of “Big Wheels in the Cornfields” but the trails and terrain in Decorah are anything but cornfields. See the trail reviews on mtnbikereview.com. I would be afraid that the Cornfield moniker might send people riding the other way. The trails and bike community in Decorah are superb and it is a beautiful small town. I would suggest something else to reflect the great riding there.

jamie: I’m totally in agreement with you on that. Decorah deserves FAR better than that!

I don’t have a name, yet. Just suggestions at present.
First; Is it a coincidence or did you plan on the fact that Iowa is the 29th state in the United States?
Second; If you want to attract more vendors the name should reflect something that will attract both vendors and participants. I like “Big Wheels in the Cornfields”, but, after seeing pix of the trail I have to agree with what Jamie stated. It also sounds more like a race than an event that wants to attract and convert those who are not currently riding a 29er.
Just some thoughts I wanted to pass along. Thanks.

haha, that’s funny about Iowa being the 29th state. I didn’t know that. not sure how that could be working into the name though.

Right now I’m liking “Big Wheeled Balleyhoo”. To me that conveys that it’s a party for 29ers which is exactly what we are going for. You don’t have to be a racer or even someone that rides 29ers… it’s just a weekend to have a good time riding and try out some new bikes.

How about “The Hills Have Wheels”?

Can’t make it out to the midwest, but good luck to y’all!

I like Big Wheeled Balleyhoo too. Simply saying it is fun. Reading the name sounds fun. And since those trails are almost home for me, I KNOW it’ll be a hoot’n a half.

    It’s primarly for 29er folks so it should say that up frontto get their attention It appears from your midwest description that there may be a west, north/east and south show in the future, so I suggest all shows start out with the title “The 29er Show” followed by the general location and year. IE;

“The 29er Show Midwest: June, 2007″

Come Look, Drool And Ride With Us

In case you go with it, I believe it is ‘ballyhoo’ without the ‘e.’

    TwentyNinerPalooza

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. It came down to “Big Wheeled Ballyhoo” (thanks Graham for the spell correction) and “TwentyNinerPalooza”. Both embodied what we were going for in the event but in the end we decided on “Big Wheeled Ballyhoo”.

So the event page has been changed to match the new name and we are still looking for any ideas or suggestions for the two days. Please leave them as a comment on the page…

aahhh… I was going to suggest “Brand Ted’s Meat!”

I like “Big Wheeled Ballyhoo” though ti flows a bit better as “Big Wheel Ballyhoo.”

Sounds like fun whatever you call it.
