29er Photo Contest Poll
November 7th, 2006 by Tim GrahlAll the pictures are in for the contest sponsored by Niner Bikes and the staff here at TwentyNineInches.com picked our 11 favorites. The original plan was to pick 5 or 6, but with well over 100 submissions, it was already extremely hard enough to narrow it down to eleven.
Here they are and you can vote on the sidebar…

Tim: The photo from Iraq is from a guy that I helped build his first 29er. The White Brosthers fork and brake rotors were sent to a very grateful Army major who did his entire build via the internet.
I vote for the ‘my other ride is a hummer’ pic.
Tim: It shocked me to see that Mon3y Mike posted my ride. My niner gets a lot of use and abuse over here. I hurt my achilles tendon and cannot run right now. The Doc told me that I could ride for Physical (and Mental) therapy. One of my team mates likes it so much he is building one too.
I vote for the “My Other Ride Is a Hummer” pic. That guy’s hardcore! I know because I almost died riding with him.
That GaryFisher Rig project picture is amazing. Great feel to it. Love the negative effect. From a photographers eye, this is it.
I agree with Martini, though lacking a photographer’s eye.
This is the kind of art I’d hang from the wall in my house or would go see at a gallery.
That said, good prints of Rocky Ridge and My Other Ride is a Hummer would make it to my wall too.
Dude, My Other Ride is a Hummer is badass!! who else takes a bike to the desert? only that dude!! rock on!
I can’t take credit for the post of the Hummer photo. Not sure who did that. Sorry to hear about the achilles. If it it makes you feel better I haven’t been doing any riding due my local County gov shutting down night-riding in my favorite park, and torrential rains making most other places a bog.
If I knew my bike was going to be posted, I’d of taken a pic with my team and some of the Iraqis I work with. I have some funny pics of me riding thru an old guard tower that was knocked over. PM or e-mail me and I’ll send em.
what’s up with you guys? when you see a hummer going down the road, do you get hard…do you immediately look for the first thing to hump into submission? it’s a bike next to a vehicle, nothing more nothing less. if someone can win a photo contest by putting a bike up next to a car, whats the value of the photo contest then?
Its not just the bike in a picture with an overgrown SUV. Its about the difficulty and adventure of building one over here. Its about all the folks that helped get the parts and know how to build it. I’d love to have a better pic of the bike in a scenic place, I actually love Rocky Ridge.
in terms of a story, you win, 110% percent no questions asked, in terms of a photo though the rocky ridge is what its about
i thought the point of a photo contest was to have the photo speak for itself? and to be judged on that…not the story behind the photo. if you wanna talk about how hard it is or the adventure of riding iraq…then show THAT in the photo. show the pieces of the bike and where they came from, the people who helped buid it…evne the dude RIDING it. cuz, seriously, anybody w/ a tan humvee who lives in vegas or arizona could take the same photo.
For me, it’s Lightshow. Why? Because it epitomises why I love mountain biking. Ahh, the serenity….
don’t make my kid cry, vote for “Deck Testing!”
All the photos that are portraits of bikes not being ridden are lame.
That said the lamest is the one with the hummer.
What does that thing get, 5mph /gallon? unless it was your express the irony it. Hummers are not that cool to me that’s all.
You made it a picture of some bike next to an overgrown suv when you titled the thing “My Other Ride is a Hummer.”
uh, bucky, where did you miss the point on this one? The dudes from Iraq! That would be why the Hummer is all armored up and military looking….It probably gets less than that milage w/all the armor on it actually. This one got in on the merits of the story behind it. If you’d actually open the pic(click on it), you’d see.
the guy with the hummer is in Iraq and he happens to be a spec ops
mastermind. I think the object was to show his dedication to the mountain
bike community. So ya know, take it easy on the guy - he sees these posts. Yeah, he got in on merit, but hey, he’s over there doing something I’m not, so Im sticking with him.
Final words on the photo from Iraq: I sold the Major the White Brothers .8 (it says 1.0 but it was converted to 80mm), sold him some Hayes rotors, gave him great advice about geometry, frame makers (especially Niners, because I own the same frame), and websites (just like this one) to help him out. I think perhaps some folks are rattled because they think that the Hummer in the photo is meant to somehow glorify oversized 4-wheelers. It’s just a background, and it just so happens to be at this guy’s office. He was cool enough to send me a whole slew of photos during the build. There IS a story, there IS a person, and there IS a bike. Leave it alone.
Hell, I have photos of my buddy’s truck loaded up with 8 bikes. Does that mean I’m glorifying the truck by including it in the photo? Hmmmm….
oh dont get me wrong, i got all the respect in the world for the military, they put their lives at risk single day to protect us as citizens, and for that i am truly grateful. But to me that get votes based on your profession. Im not raggin on the guy at all, i am raggin on the pic. Now if the pic was a soldier riding through the combat zone in full kevlar with an m4 mounted on the handlebars, now we are talkin. But a bike leaned up on a vehicle shouldnt warrant votes in a photo contest when there are so many great photos in places we can only dream of riding, no offense but iraq isnt my first choice for riding vacations. But on the flip side, that does show the dedication to ride in a place that not many people of the cycling community want to ride day in and day out. All in all no matter who wins this contest, no matter who is where, as long as in the end we are all on bikes is what matters, so cheers
No worries about ragging on the pic. More about it if you click on the sidebar. I have some funny pics. I can take one in full gear…we wear that stuff more than enough. My e-mail is there too. No…I am not a Spec Ops Mastermind..just an average guy doing his job, in a place that you have to be VERY creative in order to ride. If you have any comments, please leave them next to the pic. Going away from the keyboard for a few days. And one last note, Thank you all the folks that helped me build this bike. Pedal Dammit!!!
I vote for My other ride is a Hummer.
Another vote for “My Other Ride is a Hummer” I love how the saddle matches the hummer.
The saddle is a Fizik Nisene “Cow” seat that all the hair has rubbed off. I still love the saddle and don’t want to part with it quite yet.
The Dude in the desert gets the vote, for the picture tells me that here is a guy serving in a WAR ZONE and he takes his niner with him. Better and more telling than a mountain bike in the mountains as far as human interest goes to, in my opinion. The point of art is to give an impression of something, we all percieve different things and its like music, each has his own taste. The picture sells itself purely on peoples perceptions and to criticize those perspectives is uncool, akin to baby photo bashing.
Major,
Keep safe over there and when you get stateside go and ride in some awesome green mountains, then take an action shot.
kiwisimon,
I’ll do my best to keep safe…no riding off the FOB. We have a beautiful mountain (large hills) range near our base that just begs to be ridden.
When I get back I will get to some green mountain singletrack and ride to get away…if I get an action shot, that will be by chance.
