2007 Redline Monocog Flight 29er
September 5th, 2006 by CloxxkiHere’s the long-awaited big brother of the already legendary Monocog 29er (psst… buy it here for $249).
Made out of a nicer grade steel, welded in Japan, and fitted with awefully nice parts, it comes in at 25.7lb/11.65lb as pictured without pedals.
Retail sits at $899.99. ETA Oct/Nov.
Note the 29″-specific geometry : long-offset fork, “standard” 73/71ยบ angles, normal top tubes.
Quite a difference over the Monocog 29er and most 29″ers on the market.
Eurobike are rumors saying that long-offset suspension forks are on their way for all of the market, not just 29″, so the Flight 29er is all ready for that.
Should be an awesome bike, in terms of ride as well as value. Check out those specs!

Double the price??? They must have made some major upgrades to this bike…
Yeah, they didn’t paint it brown. I’d pay double for a bike that’s not brown. It’s $100 more than the XXIX and it’s not red, so the spec had better be good.
Some highlights :
Maxxis Ignitor tires
WTB Trail Disc rims
Avid Mechanical brakes
I’m too stupid to get pics to upload here, no matter how cool Tim makes the upload tool, sorry folks.
The frameset alone of course is supposed to be quite a bit nicer, which adds a good bit of value over the Monocog’s $250 set.
I believe this one has sliding drops, or so I have heard. And if you look closely at the picture, I think you will see it.
Ahh! Pics! Like Cloxx said, the pic function is above my head, or I’d be puttin’ up stuff too! Anyway…………
That’s quite a nice frameset for the money. Check out the tensioners, and the spec. Nicer tires, in my humble opinion, than alot of 29″ers are coming stock with. Yes, the Raleigh is cheaper, by a bit. It might swing over a few converts, but this is a really nice choice, especially if you don’t like EBB’s.
What is up with GREEN? It’s the “official” color of 29″ers, as far as I can tell!
Paragon-style tensioners indeed, a nice plus over competing offers and especially the Monocog 29er.
Oh, and on the second pic I have, there seems to be a derailer hanger on there, not the smallest detail to mention…
That is a pretty sweet looking 29er!!
Is Sanko CrMo better than the original ‘cog CrMo? How is this tubeset better?
If it wasn’t better, Redline wouldn’t go to Japan over China/Taiwan to spend more on a frame. Probably a nicer tubeset that builds a lighter frame. The Monocog really is a lot of steel.
Hey,
Are the tubes made in Japan or just welded there (follow up-where are the tubes made).
What other frames are welded in Japan anyway (I mean-is there a reason to think this is better than Taiwan–which isn’t to be confused with the People’s Republic)?
Does look great–how’s Raleigh’s frameset measure up (it’s a lower grade Reynold-520)?
Liam
Liam: I just recieved my XXIX yesterday and I can say that beyond a fork drop out spacing snafu, the frame looks very well made. The sticker on the head tube says China, by the way.
Typically, if you can communicate effectively, you can get whatever quality level you want in Asia. I don’t see lumping in “Chinese made”, “Taiwanese made”, or “Japanese made” into certain categories as being wise or helpful in determining quality of work. Each piece must stand on it’s own merits, regardless of country of origin, ya know?
To answer your question about other frames made in Japan, take a look at the Rivendell site, which features a few very nicely made models that are hand crafted in Japan. Very nice stuff.
Whoops,
it’s the KHS solo one that I’ve been eyeing that has the 520 reynolds frame-not the Raleigh.
Thanks for the reply Ted, and yeah-final product matters the most in terms of how we assess it’s value/ performance not point of origin-
Yet…
Country of origin matters to me (and other consumers as well–though not enough in my opinion– which is why REDLINE made sure to include ‘welded in Japan’ in the promo–) not just as an assessment of quality–but of course, geopolitically–Lot’s of folks, like one of the earlier posts, erroneously lump Taiwan in with China (including the Government of China!)-but of course, Taiwan-Like Japan, Europe, North America and Oceania is part of the democratic, open-market 1st world-and whenever possible I do my dang-dest to purchase from these nations-though, it’s sometimes near impossible (like Buying Kids shoes!–though, I can still get Canadian made winter boots for the boys). I’m not a Buy American chauvinist-but rather a buy 1st world, regulated open-market, fair trade/ labor, democratic globalist.
Anyway-welded in Japan works for me!
And-just like the Raleigh I’m stoked to see disc brakes showing up on these bargain SS!
Does anyone know the tyre clearance on this bike?
