The Carver 96er Build

June 13th, 2006 by Tim Grahl

The 29er in the front and 26er in the back question from a couple days ago definitely got the conversation going. It’s good timing considering the fact that I currently have a Carver 96er frame on my bike stand about two-thirds of the way built up. It’s gonna have a nice set of components when all is said and done…

Here’s what we’ve got so far:

  • Rockshox Reba 29er Forks
  • SRAM X-9 Drivetrain - derailleurs and trigger shifters
  • Truvativ Blaze Cranks and BB
  • Titec seatpost, stem and handlebars
  • Avid mechanical disc brakes

More pictures to come once the build is complete!

I’m so not liking the Carver, that I’m a little surprised a true-blood 29er site would build/feature one. It perpetuates the myth that 29er are heavy, slow, tanks, that cant have good geometry, etc.etc..

Well not only am I building a Carver but this “true-blood” 29er rider will be building up a Surly 1×1 pretty soon as well. I like riding bikes and I know there are people interested in all kinds, including what the 96er offers. I’d like to be able to give that kind of info here to… I’ll def give my true opinion of how it rides though.

Sorry Tim, didn’t mean to sound like a jerk or anything (I reserve that for my other-29er-forum remarks). I’m still hip on 26er’s for various applications. But to me, the Carver 96er is a dis-service to 29ers….much like giving the “Intelligent Design” argument any “equal time” to a real theory of Evolution.

The 96er does not diservice the 29er. Why? Because, it is a 96er. The 96ER rides extremely well especially on the steeps and tight single track on the east coast. You ride and have fun like any other bike. Is cycling becoming that segregated?
    Go ride !!

Some objective (not passionate) thoughts regarding this 29er vs 96er thing. Have a GF Rig and Salsa Dos Niner, put many miles on both in tight New England single track. Recently built a GF HiFi 96er. There is real merit with the 96er. Travis Brown knows something that few people have experienced. A properly built 96er give’s you a real advantage for those looking for a quick, tight handling ride where the only thing you are concerned with is covering technical terrain at speed.

Ask yourself this question…..why have dirt bikes been using larger front wheels for years? They roll over obstacles better. Why do they use smaller rear wheels? They accelerate quicker. I prescribe to the same theory with the 96er. Just my opion but it is backed up by experience.

Actually, I think you have no idea what you’re talking about with Dirt Bikes.
