Kona Announces ‘Shonky’ Contest’s First Winner

The inaugural winner of Kona’s ‘Make it Shonky’ contest is Thomas Ali from London, England, who turned his Humuhumu-Nukunuku-Apua’a cruiser into a 29er singlespeed XC Frankenstein of a bike.

The contest, which celebrates the wild side of modified Kona Asphalt bikes, posted the results on the company website’s owner’s area.

“Initially, I bought the Humu because I saw one in a bike magazine and thought it looked cool with the extra frame tube, and when I saw one in the 2005 Kona catalogue I was smitten,” said Ali, who swapped out components to include Mavic open pro rims on Deore disc hubs, an Avid bb front disc brake, a Rockshox Reba Race 29 fork, LP Carbon DH bars, a Thomson Elite 90mm stem, a Kalloy Uno Carbon seatpost and many other upgrades.

    CRAP! Crap I tell you. I did this conversion (Humuhumuakopunaposoidktisie to 29″ FIVE years ago. I shoulda won something then, dammit.
