New GT Peace 29er Pictures

April 20th, 2006 by Tim Grahl

So GT Bicycles is coming out with a 29 inch rigid singlespeed. The Peace 29er.

I got these pictures from their technical division and will hopefully get some more information pretty soon.

I wonder if quality will be an issue after the Pacific buy-out. I used to love Avalanche/Zaskars and their triple triangle geometry. Looks like this frame compromises some of that. Should be cool. But like a lot of other folks have been voicing: Do we really need another mass-production SS? Especially without discs?

    Just my wooden nickel’s worth….

Welcome to the club GT! Put a derailer hanger on it, drop the EBB, make it alu and you’ve got yourself a product!
GT fans will probably get one though. But from sales figures you can’t see the sales you didn’t make.
If all current S frame makers offer geared complete bikes next year…mainstream will hit soon!

I agree that this bike is a little lame from the, “been there- done that” standpoint. I can not believe they would produce this with out disc tabs, but then again, the simplicity of this proto is somewhat refreshing to see.

Gt is dead, any shop still carrying them has no dignity. After wrenching 10 years on Huffys, we dropped them as soon as the pacific buyout took place and so did all the other shops in town (except for one who definately has no dignity). Who the hell wants to contribute to the department store bike world? Good try GT, but you’re done.

The GT buyout and sellout really sux. I own two of their old high end bikes and love them. However, these days someone will tell me “I saw one just like it at Wallmart”. Kinda rains on my parade. I worked for years to buy these bikes. Now they are mass produced and a mom can buy one for their kid while they are grocery shopping.

Agreed. I used to be proud of my Zaskar and my Avalanches, but now I wouldn’t look at GT at all. Too bad, because their older frames (remember the Xizang?) where in a league of their own and excellent performers.

Anyone that knocks GT has rocks in their head. And GT’s are sold at IBD’s not walmart.

Hmmmm, that must be why you see GTs at supercheap prices all over ebay with low-end parts mixes. They have lost credibility unilaterally in the bike community.

You can’t get another bike with the same components cheaper in price than a GT, the way I see it is that you are getting more for your money. And if you think the new XT components and the Fox fr forks on the GT I-drive 4 are low end parts, you must be riding your bike on Ferrari parts.

More for your money is not a sign of integrity or quality… look at Wal-Mart there big boy. And yes, I run my 29ers on White Brothers forks, Pace forks, Hadley hubs, and custom Curtlo frames. You get what you pay for: so goes the consumerist fate of this country.

    ’nuff said

Here are your signs of integrity and quality. The new GT Zaskar frames are hydroformed made out of kinesis superlight double butted custom tubset with machined headtube and intergrated headset. It doesn’t get more quality than that. Mentioning walmart is irrelevant when no GT’s are sold their, and is not fair to bash on a company on just mere assumptions.

Okay guys, I thought I’d jump in here to give you all a little different perspective on this GT/ Walmart/ low quality debate going on here. (This is a 29″er board, after all)

When GT was purchased by Pacific Cycles, ( purveyors of your infamous “department store” rigs) the Independant Bicycle Dealers, or IBD’s for short, dumped the brand like hot potatoes. Selling the brand beyond this point was seen as putting money in the pockets of a company that was selling most of it’s output in the department store down the street from them. In other words: it was like sleeping with the enemy. So, IBD’s, for the most part, do not feel good about carrying GT, Schwinn, or Mongoose bikes, (all of which have fine IBD worthy bikes in their lines) Some IBD’s do carry these brands, but they are the exception, not the norm.

When it comes to GT bikes the “hate” comes from association, not that GT’s are bad bikes in and of themselves. I think this might account for why we are seeing a bit of “backlash” against the GT Peace 29″er here.

See! I knew I could get this back on track again!

    Nice work Guitar Ted!

Looks like Pacific did move GT downmarket and I hope the comments are because of their move away from supporting the LBS in their efforts to go downmarket and not because of the bikes themselves. I say this because seriously, there isn’t much that seperates off-the-shelf bikes (look at the current crop of recently introduced mainstream 29ers) and I wouldn’t be that suprised if that GT was welded by one of the smaller American shops anyway.

Personally, I think the latest iDrive design is pretty good, so it’s not like GT has a repuation for designing crap bikes. In fact, it was likely their overzealous R&D that got them into trouble in the first place.
