Raleigh 29er on the way

Raleigh America is well on their way to producing a steel hardtail 29 inch singlespeed bike. It’s taking a lot of styling cues from their Rush Hour model and will retail around $600.

The design is done. The prototypes are done. And they’re now being trail tested. Due out around May or June.

And this one is from an official source at Raleigh. So although I labeled this as ‘rumor’, it’s pretty definite.

This is pretty exciting considering all the affordable options that are starting to hit the market…

Wow! That’s out of the blue! Raleigh is not too into mountain bikes of late, exception being the Phase series of bikes. Hoo-doggy! My shop is a Raliegh dealer too.

Now, I do have to agree with Cloxxki, the market is going to be saturated once all these promised bikes hit the marketplace. We need a cheap geared hardtail, and I know of one coming out, I just can’t say, as I promised to hold my tongue!

I know of at least another manufacuer working on a single speed that hasn’t been announced yet. I am as well holding my tongue as I know what is good for me.

I really like the design of the Rush Hour. I like how it almost looks like a Ti bike. We will have to see if the 29er SS looks similar. I think I still will go for the Inbred though.

I ride a 26″ bike (Cannondale Rush). It is an awsome bike, but I am always looking for better and different.
I am wondering if the “29er” thing is for real. What would you say to convince me to try a 29er? Which one would you recommend?

For a geared ride I would try a Dos Niner. Big wheels and a softtail would give you a similar feel to a full-sus rig. I don’t have a need to go any bigger than that. For a hardtail, I would try a Kona 2-9. Do some technical climbing and then some technical descending with about 30 pounds of air in the tires. That gives you a good idea of what a 29er is all about: stability, speed, and traction.

Any idea on whether it will usable for a geared bike or just ss?

The Raleigh XXIX and it’s as yet un-named geared sister bike will share the same modular dropout pocket in the frame. You could, in theory, get ahold of the modular dropout with the integral derailluer hangar and swap it out on the XXIX so you could mount a rear mech. You would have to use full cable housing runs and zip ties to set it up as the XXIX will not have derailluer compatible cable stops.

That said, you will probably have to wait for awhile to get the hangared dropout, since the geared 29″er will not be available until late in the year. I’d contact a Raleigh dealer this fall and see if there is a part number for it by then. Good Luck!

I found the other thread about the Raleigh and realize that the SS Raleigh is just a Single Speed. I am not going to wait. Insteam I am thinking either the Soma Juice, Karate Monkey, or the Qball, at this point.
