What the different weights for the leading 29er rims? Salsa, DT, WTB, Stans, Bontrager, etc.

you should look at Velocity first…they are perhaps the lightest…I just had a pair made up with DT Swiss Hugi 240 hubs and DT swiss spokes(32 hole)…they are expensive but sweet!!I put on some 1.85 Bontrager tires (500 grams) for hard pack and have the new Specialized tires for other uses.

I’ve only recently made the off-road move to 29er from 26″, but am already looking to put my Gary Fisher on a diet.

Wheels are the ‘big pig’ on my rig. The previous poster is correct about the DT 240 hubs. Expensive, but at 420g for a pair of disc ready hubs, very light. Besides as a long time Bontrager wheel user, I can vouch for the reliability of the DT hub mechanism.

So far the lightest rims I’ve found for the job, at 410 g each, are the DT 1.1 700c rims (available in 28, 32, or 36 hole drillings). This is a new product to me and have little experience with it. If, however, I build up a 28 hole set, I expect to shave over 600g from the current 2250g Bontrager Superstocks I’m currently riding.

Those DT rims of course are road-narrow, don’t expect mtb-stiff tire behavior on it. If you’re a light rider you’ll probably be fine though. Consider that going to 28-hole on a 29″ers is like having 24 spokes on a 26″ wheel in terms of stiffness. I would rather copy a 26″ setup and just add 4 spokes for the rear wheel.

Velocity VXC Disc rims are in the 460g ballpark, stock Bontragers on a Fisher are 490g or a bit over 500g. New 29mm Salsa Discs 494-500g, older Delgado Cross 520g+. Velocity Dyad 506-540g (claimed 480g, lied).
Stan’s MTB rims are just over 400g for the Olympics and just over 600g for the 32mm FR’s. Unfortunately just 32h though.

Basically, if the same rim extrusion is used, a 29″ rim will have a 9-11% weight penalty.

Are there any prebuilt wheel options worth looking at? I’m not sure how I would go about doing a custom set. But I still want a second pair of wheels for my rig. I have a set of super stocks now. I often swap between dirt and road tires. I’d like a real nice set of dirt wheels for around $500USD for the set. Obviously if i could shave some weight off the better. Any ideas?

Check out the American Classic offerings. They are the right price range and are pretty light!

    Thanks for the tip

Check out Stan’s ZTR 355 rims at notubes.com. The listed weight for 29″ rims is 410g, two rims I got weighed in 384 and 394g! With WTB LaserLite hubs and DT SuperComp spokes they built up to 1575g for a pair wheelset. No weight penalty over 26″ wheels, actually lighter than my Mavic 517/XT hub/Sapim Laser spokes wheelset.
