What should I expect from my Gary Fisher Rig?

January 5th, 2006 by Tim Grahl

I recently purchased a Gary Fisher Rig with White industry fork, pretty stock parts, Avid BB cable discs, Bontrager mustang wheels, etc. and I was wondering what I could expect the weight to be and does anyone out there have a similar bike? What does it ride like? This is my first single speed and first 29er and was just looking for a heads up before I get the bike in.

    White Brothers fork I guess?

Hundreds of people have the same bike, just a Reba fork. Sounds like you’ll ind out soon enough :-)
Great frame, great brakes, top fork, your future looks bright. Your experience will be most influenced with what you’ve ridden prior to this. It’s a bike, and a good one, enjoy it!

I’ve got a Fisher 29er in the geared variety and it’s a great ride. I think they have the frame geo(standover, HT length, etc) dialed very well for the 29er. I have also had several SS bikes and would encourage you at some point to try it fully rigid. Front suspension is great, but especially for a SS there is truly nothing like the weight savings, front tracking, feel of the trail and overall experience with rigid. Also, the sheer amount of standing on the pedals makes the constant locking-out the fork(or constant bobbing) really annoying. Ofcourse, this is all my very humble opinion. Take it for what it’s worth.

    …..and now for some balance!

The Rig has been a great bike for it’s owners, overall. But, not all is well in “Fisher-land”!
    1. Creaky EBB’s have plagued these bikes. Not necessarily a deal killer, just a pain to deal with. Not a mechanical issue, per se’, it’ll just require extra maintenance to quiet it down.
    2. Bontrager wheelset not stiff enough for some. Single speeders usually like a pretty stiff wheelset, so your mileage may vary.
    3. Some instances of out of spec chainstays were reported with early ‘06 model year bikes. Fisher is warrantying all of them. If yours is new, it’s probably okay. If it’s used, and a purple frame, it’s okay.
    4. Some very rare instances of the extended part of the seat tube snapping off on riders, presumably because they stay seated over the butt-ruff. If you stand over bumps and moto style it, you won’t have an issue, I would guess.

There, that’s all the “bad” stuff I’ve ever heard about them. The good stuff FAR and away EXCEEDS the bad! You should love your new bike. I just thought I’d give you the opposite side of the coin on this bike.

I was intriged by 29er an single speeding also…

I ordered an 06 Rig November have had it since early December have ridden it some twenty hours so far in the Rain and snow of Ohio, and its better than I had hoped. I knew up front I didn’t like genesis geometry. I had a 91 Super Caliber, pre-genesis that i rode till the bottom bracket failed and no one makes the parts to fix it. It was a 19″ bike; 22.5″ top tube, so after much deliberation I bought a 19″ Rig ( I’m 6′1″ with more leg than torso) but wish I would have bought the 17″. I’m riding a 90, 6 degree stem and the steering not what it should be.

On a brighter note I love 29er’s and single speeding (this is my first of each and I’m 43 riding mountain bikes since my 86 Trek Antelope).

Lots of out of the saddle cranking, my shoulders and neck feel as abused the next day as my legs. I bought this as a training bike to make me faster on my Epic on race day, but am seriously thinking of just racing a single spd 29er. Its that fun. I have the Reba fork, some flex but not bad. I seldom lock it out. Avid cable brakes are easy to maintain but don’t perform like hydro’s but for a K the Rig is a great bike for the parts alone.

I wanted to try both 29er’s and single speeding and I’m a convert, so thanks for the opportunity Gary Fisher….

Patrick, the Rig I rode has massive brake power, it’s all setup I’m sure. Better than any of the hydro’s I ever owned, I must admit…
I ride an XL Paragon with 90mm stem and it’s just fine. Have you tried a wider handlebar yet? That may help get the steering right,a nd add some leverage for the climbs.
