Over on MTBR people are not sure. Let’s start a little poll here, is it steel or alu? It LOOKS steel to me. Thin dropouts and seatstay plate. But the tubes….looks like THICK steel?
That spec, $450? It looks really cool to me!
That’s gotta be steel, Cloxxki. I’m betting it’s made from similar pipes as there Cro-moly BMX is made from. Heavier than something like a WaltWorks, more like a Karate Monkey. No matter, if they can sell this for under $500 complete, then we will see Karate Monkey’s in stock at QBP all the time. These bikes have a great reputation in the 26″ crowds already. They should fly out the door. Let’s hope they saw the sizing poll on MTBR and make a good size run. Lot’s of XL’s, right Cloxx?
Oh that’s steel alright guys. If those were Al tubes, it’d be a heavy, flexy SOB. Just compare the tubes to the Exi’s on there, that should make it pretty clear. At least to me.
Yeah it’s steel. This is the 29er version of the Monocog Chromoly. Which is the steel Monocog.
The aluminum Monocog is the Flight, which is not yet available as a 29er.
That’s a great looking bike, and its widespread availability pretty much means any shop can stock an affordable ‘niner.
Sweet!
MG
464mm fork, single butted crmo.
Effective top tube (17″) 603.25mm
I asked the other relevant specifics already, will post when I get them.
Just having this bike on the shop floor should get many people to buy new bikes, like Orbea’s, Fishers, Titus’, etc. Let the customer hit a few curbs on the Shop Monocog29, and they’re sold. Well, almost…
For pro-29″ shop owners ideal to just give a customer this bike “and don’t you return it before it’s really dirty. Imagine a geared bike with suspension the same weight as this bike!”.
I like burly SS’s though, I own an XL Karate Monkey.
I got incorrect info at first, 474mm will the fork be (generous, good! 15-17-19-21 sizes. 15:71/74, 17/19/21:72/73. 39mm fork offset, all good.
Chainstay length is actually 435-465mm. 445mm with 32-20 and a 96 link chain.
This thing is going to be a joy to upgrade! $1k in hand, too little for a stock Rig, but $550 left to upgrade the heck out of the Monocog! But really, why would you?
Hmmm, the 17″ has a 603mm top tube… Nice alternative to an SE BM Flyer! Supershort chainstays, short headtube so your spare 29″ 100mm suspension fork will fit just fine. Single butted steel frame so it will take a beating. Sure, no warrantee to crash it on the BMX track, but so what?
Hmm, and then, why not sell the KM frameset and get a whole Monocog bike for a few bucks extra?
I think if I manage to sell my Banshee Morphine 18″, I may just get this 17″
So when do you think we’ll be seeing the first “My Bling Monocog 29″er” post on MTBR? I’m betting it’s the day after the hit the shops! I could see that pink King stuff on there. Hmmm……..
Yep, I just found my rig for next year!!!
Really you need not one, but two of these. One to keep stock forever and take on occasional fair weather rides, till it’s a classic. One to pimp and ride most of the time. The stock parts can be spares to keep the other original forever.
please, please tell me they are spec’ing disc compatible hubs on the thing. i don’t know how many times i recommend an intro bike to people wishing the thing was upgradeable to discs. to me, selling an entry level bike (if the frame is disc compatible) without them is a slap in the face to a budding enthusiast.
The 20006 26″ Monocog comes with Disc Hubs, check the specs on the redline site (pdf). So I bet the same will hit the 29″. In fact, the 26″ also uses ExiWolf tires. WTB just calls it a 2.1 in 26″
i did check and i thought the flight came with compatible hubs, but the steel monocog didn’t.
I just wanted to let you know that following on the success of our CrossSpeed (”The Ultimate New York Bike” in New York Magazine) and CityFixed (featured in Bicycling Magazine) we are introducing a new frame for 2006 tentatively called the CrossSpeed II. It’s a pretty great design (no ego here), and it has unique dropouts which will allow multi-speed (replaceable derailleur hanger) or single speed - and it has disc mounts (the mounts and hanger adjust with the axle so you can pull the axle back to achieve correct chain tension or a lengthened wheelbase and not pull your
disc rotor out from between the pads).
The frame is in the final design stages, and as soon as all is ironed out we will offer a KILLER PRE-SEASON DEAL, with frames due in March. They will come in four sizes (Small - 41cm ST ctc, 52 virtual TT; Med- 44/54, Large 47/57, and XL 50/60). The frame is Aluminim, the fork cromoly - available in 29′er or Cyclocross rigid forks (or Marzoochi 29′er suspension). The angles are 73/73 with the Cross Fork, 71.5/71.5 with the 29′er Fork - and we will sell the forks seperately as well.
A base model will run under $500. We’ll post a picture of the sample frame and the drawings as soon as we have it all tested and approved (by mid-Jan).
Again - I’m pretty excited about this one, and I hope we manage to please you guys as well.
Best Regards
Will, NYCBikes
I have a pre-order in for 2 mono’s, 1 for the wife, 1 for me. If my son was a little taller, I’d order 1 for him as well. Which is a curious point - will the 2006 26″ versions have the same color scheme? If so, I could buy one for him in 26″ - he’s only 7.
I’m claiming the commission on those 2! Gaad call Nathan, you need that to balance your one-bike bling stable a bit
My local Redline dealer in Shreveport has 2 on order. A Med and a Large.
I freakin’ love it! Can’t wait to get my hands on one!
