November 14th, 2005 by Tim Grahl

Another question…

What is currently the lightest hardtail 29er out there regardless of price or manufacture?

Whoa! Talk about an open ended question! Well, regarding a “readily available” bike, usually meaning a “production model”, the answer would be a Fisher Rig. Obviously a single speed is going to be lighter. Now if you include a “not so readily available” bike, you could answer that a Niner One-Nine single speed bike outfitted with a rigid fork is lightest. Now if we add “custom” frame makers, and “sky is the limit” parts picks, then any number of reputable frame makers might have the lightweight crown. Seven, Titus, and Matt Chester come to mind immediately in the titanium category. However; if price is no hindrance, then Craig Calfee of Calfee designs could make you a custom carbon fiber 29″er that would be rare, strong, and VERY LIGHT in weight! (As would be your bank account afterwards!) This is not an exhaustive answer, but your question is not specific enough to answer simply.

I think the scandium VooDoo Aizan is about as light as stock frames get right now. along with the Niner of course, but the Aizan is geared-ready as well as SS.

Definitely not the Gary Fisher Rig. I have a 17″ Rig and I’ve added a variety of lightweight parts and the bike is still a piggish 24 lbs. I guess it must be a heavy frame along with heavy wheels. Weight issues aside the Rig is a super fast and fun bike to ride.

Orbea showed a new carbon 26″ hardtail at IB this year. Since they already offer an alu 29er, the chances for a carbon 29 is more of a reality than ever.

That Orbea would be one VERY PIMP 29″er!!! Let’s hope they do it!

the alu orbea 29er with lightweight parts can be brought down to about 23.5 lbs per the company rep who has one…that’s pretty light…

Titus’ Full Custom Racer in Titanium with the Exogrid frame would be my bet. About as bling as the get, about $3995 for a frame.

Sibexsports.com is now offering a Ti 29er with their ti 29er fork you could build up a sick lite bike

Yeah but if you ask Sibex about durability of their products, they pretty much ask you to leave. Someone reported about such rudeness on a forum recently.

My CTI Dean weighs 21.4 lbs with pedals and two cages. Frame alone weghs 3.1 lbs. My fieinds’ Everti weighed 22.2 and we are waiting for a Titus Exogrid next week. That should be fun! Please keep in mind that there was no budget when building these bikes.
