Intense Cycles Spider 29er

November 7th, 2005 by Tim Grahl

As mentioned on Guitar Ted’s site and the mtbr.com forums, Intense Cycles has come out with the Spider 29er.

I spoke with Jeff Steber from Intense on the phone today and he’s obviously excited about this project. He’s adjusted some of the geometry that caused some handling issues in the past and is currently working on the second revision of the bike that he’s hoping to have done and riding by this weekend.

Here’s some specs he sent my way:

  • VPP suspension with 4″ travel
  • 73 degree head angle
  • 73 degree seat angle
  • 18″ chainstay
  • 23.5″ wheelbase on med (18″)

He also says he’s painting the prototypes camo just for fun, but I think with some prodding he could be convinced to make it available to everyone.

Great follow up Tim! It’ll be more than a month before we see anything about this bike in the mags.

Any word on the weight? The camo paint is hot. They’re crazy if they don’t offer that color up as a standard option.

The weight of the medium frame is 5.4lbs.

    5.4003lbs with camo paint.

Wheelbase? Top tube I think you meant? ;-)

A 73º heat tube angle on a frame with 23.5″ top tube, much shorter and you’re in trouble with toe overlap! For the kind of riding you expect a 4″ travel bike to excel at, the 73º heat tube angle to me seems more “nervous” than “quick”.
Is Intense known to also put steep head tube angles (like 72º) on their 26″ bikes?

I like the new high-option though.

Great job Tim! I love that camo paint, except during deer season! This ain’t gonna be a cheap bike, or I’d be really interested!

See deer season would be perfect.

Then you can sneak up on them thar deers.
