Forget 29 inches… I’m going with the 36er
July 11th, 2005 by Tim GrahlThis beach cruiser is quite a unique bike. It’s the Monster Cruiser bicycle with 36″ tires and an old fashioned classic design. You’ll feel like a kid again riding the Monster Cruiser bicycle. Don’t let this bike’s huge, jumbo-sized wheels fool you. It is easy and fun to ride. Tower above your friends as the giant 36 inch wheels give you a true “over the road” feel. It’s perfect for casual riding, especially on the beach or in the park.
Some Highlights of Monster Cruiser Bicycle are:
- 36″ front & rear Coker button tread tires
- Chrome wheels
- Comfortable springer seat
- 30″ handlebars
- Rear coaster and front caliper brakes
- Available in White only

I also saw them in red.
I’ve never seen one in real, but Nightfire and myself have both been inspired by these montercruisers to design MTB frames around those wheels. Me being the shortest @ 6′4″, I would just manage to fit a bike with 515mm chainstays, bent or offset seat tube, ~660mm top tube, 100mm stem and custom droopy H-style Bar. I’d only just not suffer toe overlap, and the geomtry could actually be relatively snappy, with a custom steel fork.
There’s already reports of 5′1″ riders fitting comfortably on 29″ers, so projecting that to my 6′4″, I could jsut as easily fit a 36″er. Room to use proportionate ~200mm cranks also.
With a 122cm or longer wheelbase plus a 90cm wheel, one better make sure the garage has a free spot for that monster. But imagine how that would ride…rigid would be plenty for everyone. I already calculated a weight of 18-19kg is quite possible, even with a 4kg frame and despite the really heavy retro car/moto-tech tires.
On bumpy but otherwise flat or flat, not to tight trails, the 36″er will kick serious butt. Don’t try it for start-stop style racing though, it will suck so bad
Oh, when I hit the jackpott, this bike will be on top o my must-have list.
I’m 6′4″ and 270 pounds.
I have a full-suspension 26er and have been studying 29ers with great interest. I just came across this handful of 36ers and I am hooked! I WANT ONE! 26ers are waaay too small. 29ers are still much too small but they’re better than 26ers…but a geared 36er? Daddy WANTS!
I don’t buy the start-stop argument. Yes, huge wheels have much more angular inertia than small wheels, but for any given speed, huge wheels are turning much more slowly. There may be some angular momentum penalty but I think it will much less than most people expect. Imagine a pair of roller-blade wheels on your bike. You would have to accelerate them to incredible speed just to get moving. Giant wheels would be barely turning in comparison.
Yes, giant wheels have greater total weight and the giant bicycle will have to weigh more than a 29er, everything else being equal. There will be some penalty in total bicycle weight but rotational-inertia…I’m not convinced.
I think the amazing joy of striding over rocks, curbs, snow, mud, etc., etc., etc. will make 36ers a real option.
I soooooooo want one.
