Mike Builds A.N.T. 29ers
June 7th, 2005 by Tim GrahlI have been wanting to make a 29″ wheel bike for a long time. This type of bike was first developed by Wes Williams with influence by Bruce Gordon Cycles. The 29″ wheel bike is a trail bike which has 2″ wide tires that fit on to wide 700c rims. These big wheel bikes are best suited to dirt roads, carriage paths, abandoned rail beds, etc. However, these bikes can be ridden any where. The wheels are so big that you have to build a frame and fork to fit them. I would like to note that I would not recommend this type of bike for anyone under 5′6″ as the frame fit would be compromised. People under 5′6″ would be better suited on a bike with 26″ wheels.
The bike pictured (my bike) is set up as a 2 speed fixed gear utilizing an antique Bendix 2 speed lever action hub (not to be confused with the kick back). These hubs are hard to find so I unfortunately can not build you a 2 speed fixed at this time. I am considering having the hubs redesigned and manufactured locally but that is a future project.
